How We Picked These Electric Fireplaces

In making this top 10 list of the best electric fireplaces, we kept 3 things in mind: Style and ease of installation, heating capacity, and customer satisfaction.

Style And Ease Of Installation

Image of an electric fireplaceOne of the most important things about purchasing an electric fireplace is its installation. Does it have an easy installation like wall mounted TVs? Does it need installing at all. Does it require a professional? We tried to stay away from any of the fireplaces that required professional installation.

Many people want different styles of fireplaces. Some of the more popular styles are wall mounted fireplaces, TV stand fireplaces, and fireplaces with a large heating unit. We have included each of these varieties.

Heating Capacity

Although most of these fireplaces have a heating unit, most of them will only heat a small 20×20 room. This may be nice for that room these smaller heating fireplaces do not qualify as the best heating fireplaces. We included one fireplace that will heat up to a 1,000 sq. ft.

You have to decide whether you are going for the looks, or the heat of the fireplace. If you are looking for a room home heating system, then most of these electric fireplaces will not do the job.

Customer Satisfaction

All of the fireplaces that we have listed are rated by customers at 80% or higher depending on the rating system used on different websites. They are either 4 stars or higher at the time of the review.

We also read all the individual customer reviews to see how well the manufacturer responded to customer issues and how well people recommended these fireplaces. We only took into account customers with a verified purchase.

Electric Fireplace Buyers Guide

When purchasing one of these fireplaces it is important to take a moment to do some research in order to make the best decision possible. This electric fireplace buyers guide will help you in your research.

Types Of Electric Fireplaces

  • Wall Mounted Fireplaces: There are two types of wall mount fireplaces. They are those that are mounted “on the wall” and those that are mounted “in the wall.” The easiest type to mount are the on the wall type but the more modern and professional looking mount is the recessed in the wall mount.
  • Corner Fireplaces: Corner mount fireplaces sit in the corner of the room and look like they fit right in place. Some models even come with collapsible walls to make sure they fit the right angles you need for your corner.
  • TV Stand And Entertainment Center Fireplaces: One of the most popular styles of fireplaces are the TV stand or Entertainment center type. The fireplace fits in the center of the stand and will hold the weight of a normal sized flat screen TV
  • Fireplace Inserts: These fireplaces are usually more geared to being a alternate heat source as well as a stylish fireplace. They usually fit inside a traditional fireplace however they can also fit in a faux fireplace.
  • Floor Stand Fireplaces: These models are usually placed flat against a wall and become the focal point for the room they are in like a living room. They come in many styles including those with a mantle above them for you to place decorative items upon.

Size And Heating Power

Make sure your new fireplace is the right size for the space that you want to place it in. Make sure that there is an 120 volt electrical receptacle nearby. Most fireplaces use the 120 volt plug although some inserts use 240 volts.

Most of the heaters are 750-1500 watt heaters. They will heat a room that is about 400 square feet. They are not meant to be home heaters, but do well as a room heater.

Important Features

Flame Only Setting

Make sure your unit has a setting that is for flame only. You do not want your unit to always put out heat. Sometimes you want the look of a fire without the warmth of the fire.

Flame Speed Control And Brightness

Do you want a roaring fire or gentle embers? Make sure your model has a flame control so you can set the mood just right!

Check to see if the model you are looking at has a brightness control. Roaring fires are bright and embers are dim. You want your model to be as realistic as possible.

Heat Control

These fireplaces have different types of heat control. Some just have a high/low setting and others have a thermostat. If you want to control the heat in the room you are in, make sure you have a thermostat.

Remote Control

At the very least you want a fireplace with a digital control for ease of use. However the best electric fireplaces come with a remote control. Make sure you check to see what type of control unit the model you are looking at comes with.

Portability

Do you want to use your fireplace in more than one room? How heavy is the unit? How portable is it? Some models that we listed are able to be moved with ease.

Safety Considerations

There are really no safer room heaters than electric fireplaces. The flames are fake and the fake flames are enclosed. However there are a few things you do want to keep in mind.

Make sure that the fireplace you are considering is always cool to the touch. Make sure it has an overheating sensor that will shut the unit down in case it starts overheating. Look for UL and CSA certifications to know you’re purchasing a safe, efficient electric fireplace.

Why Buy An Electric Fireplace?

More and more people are turning from wood burning and gas fireplaces to electric fireplaces. The reason? They are by far the most economical and cost efficient fireplace on the market.

We all remember spending time around the fireplace when we were young. Those times bring back good memories. Now you can replicate those memories without all the muss and fuss. Here’s why.

Top Reasons People Are Buying Electric Fireplaces

Now The Chimney Sweep came up with some great reasons. Here are a few more reasons as well.

Because you want the mood and warmth a fireplace gives

Let’s face it. Nothing is more romantic than sitting by a fireplace. There is just something about the flickering light of flames that cause the flames of love to ignite.

But that isn’t all. Spending time with family and friends with firelight in the background can’t be beat. Nothing sets the tone of the room like a fireplace.

Because you like a care free lifestyle

The biggest drawback to wood burning fireplaces is all the time and effort it takes to fuel and maintain the fireplace. How much time do you want to spend going out and cutting wood? How about stacking it? Then hauling it into the house. What about cleaning up the ashes after you are done using it? What about hiring a chimney sweep every year to clean your chimney?

All of these things make your life filled with more hassle. An electric fireplace comes with none of that burden!

Because safety is important to you

Image of an entertainment center electric fireplaceDo you have kids? Do you have expensive floors or carpeting? Do you want an expensive home owners insurance policy? Wood burning fireplaces are not nearly as safe as electric fireplaces. Kids can inadvertently get burned. Your wood burning fireplace can spit out an ember and burn your floor or carpet or worse. And your insurance company is going to gouge you for having one.

Electric fireplaces are safe and will not burn your children, floors, or your pocketbook.

Because you care about the environment

Electric fireplaces are the most efficient type of fireplace on the market. They send 99% of the heat they produce into the room they are in. This is almost 50% more than wood burning or gas fireplaces.

They also produce no toxic fumes or environmentally harmful gases. They are also less expensive to use than any other type of fireplace. They are cheaper than gas fireplaces, and when you take into account the labor cost of cutting, splitting, stacking, and hauling wood into the house, the savings is enormous compared to a wood burning fireplace!

Because you are still renting a home

Most electronic fireplaces are portable. They go where you go. So you don’t have to worry that you will lose the fireplace you love if you move. You also don’t have to wait until you own a home of your own. You can enjoy a fireplace now and later when you own your own home.

As you can see, owning an electric fireplace is a smart move for wise shoppers.

How Do Electric Fireplaces Work?

Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, I grew up with a fireplace in my home. It was great on those long dreary nights while it was pouring rain outside. It became part of my sense of home and comfort.

However I did not like the muss and fuss associated with having a wood burning fireplace. I hated chopping the wood, stacking the cords of wood needed to last the winter. And I hated cleaning the ashes out of the fireplace.

But now all that has changed.

With the advances of modern technology, I can once again have the feeling of home and comfort without adding to my chore list. Electric fireplaces do the trick for me. Maybe they will do the same for you.

Most people when thinking about buying an electric fireplace, have questions concerning how they work and how hard it is to use them in their home. Hopefully after you read this article, your questions will be answered.

Frequently Asked Questions About How Electric Fireplaces Work

How Do Electric Fireplaces Create The Flames?

Image of an electric fireplace

Just so everyone understands. The flames in an electric fireplace are not real. They are fake. The realistic flames are produced by using a regular light bulb like a chandelier light bulb  and refracting the light with the use of mirrors. The light is displayed in a three-dimensional pattern that has no defined pattern, and this technique gives the flames a realistic look.

Some of the most realistic electric fireplaces even use water vapor, to emulate smoke. This gives even a more natural look than refracted light alone.

How Do Electric Fireplaces Produce Heat?

Electric fireplaces work in a similar fashion to an infrared heater or space heater. They have heating coils on the inside of them that are heated with electricity. Next to the heating coils is a fan or blower that blows the heat out of the fireplace and into your room.

Electric fireplaces are the most energy efficient of all types of fireplaces, including gas fireplaces. The cost of running an electric fireplace is much lower than other types of fireplaces.

How Do You Control An Electric Fireplace?

There are 2 ways you can control an electric fireplace. You can adjust the settings on the unit itself, or you can use a remote control.

Remote controls vary. Some only turn the unit on and off while others will allow you to adjust the flame, the temperature settings, and turn it on and off.

Some electric fireplaces even allow you to digitally set the temperature setting just like a household thermostat.

How Do I Install An Electric Fireplace?

Most electric fireplaces are plug in play unless you happened to buy a fireplace insert or a recessed mount fireplace.

You just hang them on the wall like you would a flat screen TV or your just place them on the floor depending on which type of fireplace you purchased.

You just plug them in to the nearest electrical outlet and away you go to having many many nights relaxing around your fireplace.

How Much Electricity Does An Electric Fireplace Use?

Lots of people put electric fireplaces in their homes because of the ambiance that they bring and the practicality of not having to use wood to keep the fire going. They just don’t have time to go out and cut firewood and don’t want to clean up the mess that happens with real wood fireplaces.

But how energy efficient are these fireplaces? How much electricity do they use? Are they really a smart move? Hopefully after reading this article you will see what a wise decision it is to get the best electric fireplaces for your home.

What Is The Typical Electric Usage Of An Electric Fireplace?

On average, electric fireplaces only use about 1500 watts of power. When used just for ambiance, the cost ranges between .003 (3/10ths of a cent) to .03 (3 cents) per hour. This is the cost for just running the flames without the heat.

If you use the heating unit as well then the costs go up. The typical electric fireplace when placed on the medium heating setting using some type of thermostat that turns them on and off just keeping the room at the medium temperature, then the cost goes up to .09 cents per hour.

If you really want to keep the room warm and cozy and put the heating unit on its maximum setting then the cost will double with about .18 cents per hour when used.

Depending on how much you use your fireplace, this will mean your average cost per year will be between $50.00 and $80.00 per year. Of course this assumes that you are not going to use it full time or every season of the year. Your cost will vary by use and the price of electricity in your region.

How Much Heat Does An Electric Fireplace Produce?

Heat is measured in BTU’s. That is an abbreviation for British Thermal Unit. The average electric fireplace puts out 5,000 BTU’s which is enough to heat a small to medium sized room. Somewhere around 400 square feet.

Some electric fireplace manufacturers produce fireplaces and inserts that will produce more heat. They can go as high as 10,000 BTU’s but obviously at a higher electrical consumption rate. Your cost will go up with these more powerful units.

Advantages In Using An Electric Fireplace

  • Electric fireplaces do not require chimneys, vents, or ducts.
  • Electric fireplaces keep all the heat inside the house rather than up the chimney.
  • Electric fireplaces do not require gas lines to be installed in the house, propane tanks to be filled, or an extra utility bill.
  • Most electric fireplaces just plug into an electrical receptacle. Only large ones need hardwired.
  • Electric fireplaces do not get hot enough to burn people or objects. There is no real flame.

As you can see, electric fireplaces are the most energy efficient type of fireplace on the market making them a wise choice for those who are environmentally conscious.

What Is The Most Realistic Electric Fireplace?

Many people when they start investigating electric fireplaces ask us which one is the most realistic.

Well I scoured the internet to find a video of the most realistic electric fireplace and found this one. As always you get what you pay for. This electric fireplace is quite expensive which is why we did not include it in our electric fireplace reviews. We wanted to keep the price of the electric fireplaces we reviewed within the average person’s budget.

However that doesn’t mean we can’t dream, or save our pennies in order to get something really really nice.

This electric fireplace (link to Amazon) not only has 3 dimensional flames, but it has the illusion of smoke and glowing embers. I think you will really be impressed! The audio of the video is not the greatest but you will be able to see how realistic this electric fireplace really is.

As you can see, modern technology has made it where electric fireplaces can actually look like the real thing! The smoke feature using steam is quite ingenious, however it might be a drawback in climates with high humidity already.

However overall if you don’t mind spending over $1,000 dollars for an electric fireplace, the Dimplex fireplace has got to be the most realistic on the market.

If you want an electric fireplace but don’t want to spend that type of money. You might want to check out our reviews and buyers guide.

Our Review

There has been some controversy concerning the “Northwest” brand and people have sometimes confused “Northwest” with “Northwest Fire And Ice”

I can assure you, however, that the controversy is completely unrelated to Northwest Fire Adn Ice, the manufacturer of electric fireplaces, and its products. Northwest’s electric fireplaces are actually pretty impressive, as the Northwest Fire and Ice Electric Fireplace serves to prove.

The Northwest Fire and Ice Electric Fireplace features two heat settings, but it can also be operated without heat for nights that require a little bit of ambiance but no extra warmth.

When set to 1500 watts, its maximum heat, this electric fireplace can warm up to 400 square feet, so it’s perfect for domestic use.

As a piece of furniture, the Northwest Fire and Ice Electric Fireplace is breathtaking and can add a modern touch to even the oldest of homes.

Pros

  • The Northwest Fire and Ice Electric Fireplace uses energy efficient LED technology and will have little impact on your energy bill.
  • This electric fireplace can be easily mounted to the wall, whether you are DIY savvy or not.
  • Among the various flame effects is an electrifying blue flame, which accounts for the “Ice” portion of “Fire and Ice”.

Cons

  • The decorative crystals included with this electric fireplace are a challenge to keep in place.
  • The simulated flames of the Northwest Fire and Ice Electric Fireplace are not particularly convincing and may detract from the decorative aspect of the product.

Bottom Line

While some customers have had complaints about the heat it provides (I can’t say that I have experienced any temperature issues firsthand), the Northwest Fire and Ice Electric Fireplace is one of the most stylish electric fireplaces on the market today.

With its shining black exterior and flawless glass screen, it looks more like a 42 inch iPhone than it does a fireplace. It has long been a favorite of interior designers and those looking to drag their dull living rooms into the 21st century.

Of course, this electric fireplace would likely look just at home in the 22nd century.

Northwest Electric Fireplace Review (52” Wall Mount)

Northwest Electric Fireplace

Price: [amazon_link asins=’B00OP8US5U’ template=’PriceLink’ store=’tabestru-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’84a916a7-8e6e-11e7-923a-d51dc88e0f73′]

Features

  • 52 inches in width.
  • Weight of 70 pounds.
  • Mounting hardware for easy installation.
  • Power cord of 71 inches
  • Decorative crystals for display upon flame bed.
  • Remote control operated
  • Two heat settings. (low and high)
  • Multiple flame color options.
  • Heats up to 400 square feet.
  • Energy efficient LED technology.

Our Review

Here we have another product from Northwest. The Northwest 52” Wall Mounted Electric Fireplace is pretty similar to the Fire and Ice Electric Fireplace that we looked at in the previous entry. Both fireplaces boast a total reach of 400 square feet when turned up to maximum heat.

The main difference between this electric fireplace and the previous model is the size. The Northwest Fire and Ice Electric Fireplace comes in at 42 inches. This model, however, has a width of 52 inches, making it a far better choice for those who frequently entertain large groups of people in their home.

The Northwest 52” Wall Mounted Electric Fireplace boasts multiple heat settings and many of the same flame effects as its 42-inch counterpart.

The installation process for this electric fireplace is fairly straightforward and does not require any sort of professional installation, though you will need plenty of room.

Pros

  • With push-button controls, the Northwest 52” Wall Mounted Electric Fireplace is perfect for those who struggle with technology.
  • With two heat settings, this electric fireplace is as suited to large rooms as it is bedrooms and offices.
  • This electric heater can be operated via remote control, so you won’t have to leave your seat to adjust the temperature.

Cons

  • Northwest has spawned a lot of knock-off products, so you may end up with a cheap imitation unless you buy from a reliable source.
  • Despite being just 10 inches wider than the previous product, this electric fireplace costs $100 more.

Bottom Line

The Northwest 52” Wall Mounted Electric Fireplace is ridiculously similar to the Northwest Fire and Ice Electric Fireplace. In fact, to tell you the truth, I would go for the latter if I had to choose, thereby sacrificing 10 inches in width but saving myself upwards of $100 in the process.

That being said, if you have a large room to heat and specifically require a 52-inch fireplace, you are unlikely to find one as impressive as this one.

For those who have the need and the money, the Northwest 52” Wall Mounted Electric Fireplace is an excellent purchase.

This is the final item on our list of wall mount electric fireplaces and, if you ask me, it’s a pretty good way to go out.

Despite its low price – or, perhaps, because of it – the Della Wall Hanging Electric Fireplace has become one of the most popular electric fireplaces on the market today.

Although it boasts a variety of unique and innovative features, it is most easily distinguished from competing electric fireplaces by its curved design. It is this unusual shape that gives this electric fireplace a stylish contemporary appearance and makes for a more even distribution of heat.

Its realistic flame can be summoned without heat, but you’ll never be without its ambiance.

With ETL, CSA, and UL certifications, the Della Wall Hanging Electric Fireplace has a proven history of excellence and is likely to increase in popularity over the next couple of weeks, months, and years.

  • With its automatic cut-off, this electric heater eradicates almost entirely the risk of overheating.

Cons

  • As its name suggests, the Della Wall Hanging Electric Fireplace can be mounted to a wall. However, its curved design makes the mounting process a little complicated.

Bottom Line

If you have just moved out of your parents’ home and into your first apartment, you’re soon going to learn that decorating and heating a room can be pretty expensive. • This electric fireplace uses Altra Furniture’s built-in reflectors to create a realistic flame effect.
  • With ultra long-lasting LED lights, this electric fireplace will give you a stellar performance for years on end

Cons

  • This electric fireplace takes a lot of time and persistence to assemble. It is advisable to set aside three hours or so for setup.
  • This electric fireplace is a little noisier than most, which can be irritating when you’re trying to watch television.

Bottom Line

Although this product looks far more expensive than the Touchstone Sideline 50 Recessed Electric Heater Fireplace, the Altra Furniture Farmington 60” Console actually sells for over $100 less.

For your money, you not only get an impeccably designed electric fireplace with an abundance of features and modes, but you also get a stylish contemporary television console that has the ability to accommodate a TV of up to 60 inches in width and nearly 100 pounds in weight.

If you’re planning to redecorate your home but are working off a tight budget, the Altra Furniture Farmington 60” Console is the electric fireplace for you.

Our Review

Touchstone isn’t the only manufacturer of electric fireplaces to have multiple products featured on this list. With the Farmington 50” TV Console, Altra Furniture makes its second appearance in this article; a return appearance of which it is more than deserving.

The Altra Furniture Farmington 50” TV Console is actually pretty similar to the Altra Furniture product we looked at a little earlier on, although it is a couple of inches smaller. There are few, if any, differences between the electric fireplaces featured in the two models.

Because of its compact size when compared to the previous Altra Furniture product, this electric fireplace sells for almost $100 less than its 60-inch alternative. This reduction in price makes it a great option for those who were roped in by the Altra Furniture Farmington 60” TV Console but are lacking in either the funds or the space to justify purchasing it.

Pros

  • The electric fireplace of the Altra Furniture Farmington 50” TV Console is the same size as that of its 60-inch counterpart.
  • With a maximum capacity of 55 pounds, this console can hold almost twice the weight of the average television.
  • The LED bulbs are not hot to touch and are safe for children.

Cons

  • If you are considering purchasing this product online, you should note that the electric fireplace has a history of being damaged during shipping.
  • Much like its larger cousin, this TV console and electric fireplace combo is a pain in the neck to set up.

Bottom Line

One of my favorite things about the products of Altra Furniture is that you always know what you’re getting. Its TV consoles all offer the same innovative features while varying only in size.

The Altra Furniture Farmington 50” TV Console is essentially the Farmington 60” TV Console on a slightly smaller scale. For the reduced price, you are sacrificing nothing but the ability to hold a few extra pounds.

If you’re an Altra Furniture devotee but are trying to stick to a budget, there is no reason not to choose this electric fireplace over its bigger and more expensive alternative.

Our Review

With the Altra Furniture Bruxton Electric Fireplace, Altra Furniture marks its third appearance on this list. This model is actually pretty different to the previous two Altra Furniture electric fireplaces we looked at, but it performs to the same high standard customers have come to expect from the brand.

The first thing you’ll notice about the Altra Furniture Bruxton Electric Fireplace is that unlike its predecessors, it is not part of a television console. It is a stand-alone electric fireplace and boasts the ability to heat up to 400 square feet.

Its compact size means that it can be positioned almost anywhere in your living room, which is great if you want a simple plug and play model. The LED bulbs of the Altra Furniture Bruxton Electric Fireplace remain cool to the touch, so you don’t have to worry about your children or your pets injuring themselves by getting too close.

Pros

  • Despite being significantly smaller than the previous two Altra Furniture electric fireplaces, the Altra Furniture Bruxton Electric Fireplace boasts the same heat reach of up to 400 square feet.
  • This is one of the most affordable electric fireplaces available and can be purchased for in or around $100.
  • This electric fireplace comes fully assembled, so you can enjoy its warmth right out of the box.

Cons

  • Owing to its size, this electric fireplace is quite delicate and should be handled with care during unboxing.
  • This electric fireplace offers only one heat setting, which isn’t ideal in particularly cold climates.

Bottom Line

If you’re looking for an electric fireplace to serve as a secondary source of heat in your bedroom or kitchen as opposed to one that can heat your whole house, the Altra Furniture Bruxton Electric Fireplace is a pretty safe bet.

Although its small size prevents it from being much use as a shelf or storage area, it exudes a degree of heat you would expect from a more expensive model. The only major issue with this electric fireplace is its single heat setting, but that won’t be a problem if you have other sources of warmth in your home.

Best Electric Fireplace For Heat

If you are looking for an electric fireplace with heat then you should check out this unit. It will heat up to 1,000 square feet

Our Review

Electric fireplaces are great, I don’t think anybody is ever going to deny that. They make it possible to enjoy the heat and convenience of a traditional fireplace without the smoke, risk of disaster, or tedious cleanup process the following day.

That being said, a lot of electric fireplaces fall down when it comes to appearance. Many of them look far too sleek and obnoxious to create the ambiance of yesteryear and stray way too far from the classic fireplace design.

That’s where ClassicFlame comes in.ClassicFlame is dedicated to giving its customers the convenience of an electric fireplace combined with the look and aura of the fireplaces of the 20th century.

With the ClassicFlame 26” Infrared Quartz Electric Fireplace Insert, the brand has made it possible for you to enjoy a smoke-free fire while transporting your living room to Christmastime during the First World War (in a good way).

Pros

  • The ClassicFlame 26” Infrared Quartz Electric Fireplace Insert comes equipped with Safer Plug fire prevention technology, which almost totally eradicates the risk of a fire being caused by overheating.
  • This electric fireplace boasts a 5200 BTU heater, which gives it a maximum reach of 1000 square feet.
  • This electric fireplace uses infrared heat to avoid drying out your living room’s air.

Cons

  • The tools necessary for in-wall installation or any sort of mounting of this electric fireplace must be purchased separately.
  • Many customers have complained of a diminished performance if this electric fireplace is left inactive during warmer months.

Bottom Line

If you’re one those people who is in love with the past but are capable of acknowledging the benefits of modern technology, the ClassicFlame 26” Infrared Quartz Electric Fireplace Insert likely holds a great deal of appeal for you.

This product promises the perfect combination of classic style and contemporary design techniques, which ultimately creates an ambiance once thought to have gone out with the passenger pigeon and silent films.

Available for under $250, the ClassicFlame 26” Infrared Quartz Electric Fireplace Insert is probably as close as we’re going to get to a time machine for, ironically, the foreseeable future.

Image of an electric fireplaceFinal Considerations

As I have mentioned more than once, these electric fireplaces are not house heaters. They are room heaters. Please don’t expect to heat more than a room unless you go with a higher end fireplace insert.

Finally the biggest quality of an electric fireplace is the ambiance. They are meant to give a home a sense of warmth and well being. Use them wisely and for what they are designed for and I am sure you will love the electric fireplace you choose.
