Bible Verses About Anger – Do Not Let The Sun Go Down On Your Wrath

a christian quote about angerBible verses about anger can be a touchy subject. No pun intended. LOL It is a difficult subject to deal with because on one hand, anger is a normal and even healthy reaction to certain events, yet on the other hand, uncontrolled or long lasting anger can be a very negative and damaging emotion. It can be expressed in many ways including violently, silently, or with crying which is most typical with women. It is my prayer that as you read these scriptures that you will get a better understanding on this subject and if you are dealing with negative anger or on the receiving end of that type of anger that you will find the help you are seeking through these Bible verses about anger.

Bible verses about anger

Scripture verses concerning the anger of God

Exodus 32:12

Why let the Egyptians say, ‘Their God rescued them with the evil intention of slaughtering them in the mountains and wiping them from the face of the earth’? Turn away from your fierce anger. Change your mind about this terrible disaster you have threatened against your people!

Exodus 34:6

The LORD passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The LORD! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.

Joshua 23:16

If you break the covenant of the LORD your God by worshiping and serving other gods, his anger will burn against you, and you will quickly vanish from the good land he has given you.”

1 Kings 15:30

This was done because Jeroboam had provoked the anger of the LORD, the God of Israel, by the sins he had committed and the sins he had led Israel to commit.

Psalm 2:12

Submit to God’s royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed in the midst of all your activities— for his anger flares up in an instant. But what joy for all who take refuge in him!

 Psalm 38:1

[ Psalm 38 ] A psalm of David, asking God to remember him. O LORD, don’t rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage!

Psalm 85:4

Now restore us again, O God of our salvation. Put aside your anger against us once more.

Jeremiah 10:10

But the LORD is the only true God. He is the living God and the everlasting King! The whole earth trembles at his anger. The nations cannot stand up to his wrath.

Romans 2:5

But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

Romans 9:22

In the same way, even though God has the right to show his anger and his power, he is very patient with those on whom his anger falls, who are destined for destruction.

1 Thessalonians 5:9

For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his anger on us.

Scriptures about human anger

James 1:20

Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.

James 1:19

[ Listening and Doing ] Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

Ephesians 4:26

And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry,

John 11:38

Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance.

Mark 10:14

When Jesus saw what was happening, he was angry with his disciples. He said to them, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children.

Matthew 5:22

But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.

As you can see, there are times when anger is justified, but we must still be careful and not allow that anger to control us or dictate our actions. God expresses just anger when God’s people turned against him and followed after other God. Jesus expressed anger at injustice. However in both cases, forgiveness was readily available and would soothe the anger. That is the way we are to be as well. If we get angry we need to be the type of people that will readily forgive and lay down the anger that we feel. We should not continue in our anger and let the sun set while we are still angry.
