The 10 Best Vintage Record Players 2018 – Buyers Guide And Reviews

This article was updated in November to reflect the best vintage record players for the upcoming 2018 year.

Do you remember the days when your family would sit around the vintage record player and listen to music after dinner?

Whether it was in the 40's and you were listening to the Glen Miller Orchestra, or the 50's and it was Bill Haley and the Comets, or even the 60's with the latest Beatles release, those were times memories were made of.

Now you can relive those moments with today's vintage record players.

Our Picks For The Best Vintage Record Players

Choosing A Record Player That Is Right For You

How We Picked These Vintage Record Players

In making this top 10 list of the best vintage record players, we kept 3 things in mind: Style, features, and customer satisfaction.

Image of a vinyl record on a record playerStyling

A record player can't be vintage unless it looks vintage. The style of these record players all model the exact look of record players of the past. Some come straight out of the 40's and some the 50's and all of them look like the record players you or your parents or grandparents grew up with.

Features

We have broken down this list of the top vintage turntables further by categorizing them by features. Some are portable vintage record players, some have AM/FM radios that come with them, some are Bluetooth technology enables so you can connect your wireless speakers or wireless earbuds to them, along with Bluetooth enabled Ipods, cellphones, and MP3 players.

It is totally up to you what features are the most important to you. We tried to categorize these players according to what people want most in a vintage record player.

Customer Satisfaction

All of the players that we have listed are rated by customers at 80% or higher depending on the rating system used on different websites. They average either 4 stars or higher at the time of the review.

We also read all the individual customer reviews to see how well the manufacturer responded to customer issues and how well people recommended these record players. We only took into account customers with a verified purchase.

Vintage Record Player Buyers Guide

Image of vinyl records stored above a record playerYou would think that buying a vintage player would be a simple task. And for those of us that grew up with these vintage players, it is. But many people have never owned a vintage player and so I want to make sure that you have all the tools and tips you need in order to buy the best player you can possibly buy.

Parts And Accessories

The first thing you need to think about is where you can get parts for your vintage player when parts wear out. Needles and belts wear out over time.

Needles

You want to make sure that you can buy needles for your player. These are sometimes called stylus. Make sure that you know of a convenient source to get a replacement needle for your player.

Don't use ceramic needles. They will damage your records. Always use high quality diamond needles.

Belts

Make sure you check to see what size of a belt your vintage player will use. Check to make sure you can easily replace the belt if it gets worn. Here is an example of a belt that can be used to replace some belts on vintage players.

Music Players

Some people just want a turntable while other people want the ability to listen to all types of music players in their unit. If you want more than just a vintage turntable, then make sure you get the unit that has all the players you want.

Cassette Player

If your vintage player has a cassette player, then check and see if it has the options you want like automatic rewind and possibly a cassette recorder as well.

CD Player

If you want digital music, then check and see if your vintage player comes with a CD player and CD burner. Some players will allow you to not only play CD's but burn your music onto CD's. This is a great option if you want to transfer your vinyl recordings onto CD's.

Digital Music

Some vintage players will give you the option to play MP3 files and record MP3 files onto a flash drive or MP3 player. Once again this is a great way to extend the life of your vinyl records by recording them to a digital file.

Image of a record storeCost

Finally you should think about the cost. A vintage player does not have to cost an arm and a leg. You can get a great player for less than $200.00 and most units under $100.00 will satisfy the average vintage lover. Make sure you pay enough to get what you want but not so much just because you think that will be the best vintage record player. You want to save some for your vintage album collection.

Why Are Vintage Record Players Popular?

Audiophiles Love Analog Music

Audiophiles (lovers of music) are passionate about authenticity. A digital recording is not as pure as an analog recording. Digital music is a snapshot of a recording converted into bytes. It does not completely replicate the audio soundwaves.

It can be argued that today's albums are produced using a digital master copy. Thus the argument about analog sound waves being closest to the original loses a little credibility. However most audiophiles will contend that their albums are better than a CD and a MP3.

Depending on the compression level the CD or MP3 is recorded at, they are probably right.

The Feeling Of Community

If you have never ventured in to an old record store, you may not understand this. There is a feeling of community that happens when you gather together with people who love the same things you love. When you enter a record store you are gathered with people who love music like you do.

You see, anyone can download a digital music file. Anyone can buy a CD at Walmart. But a real music lover takes the time to go into a record store. They are the passionate ones.

image of album artAlbum Art

CD's, MP3's, Cassettes, and 8 Tracks could not hold a candle to the art created with vinyl records. People love the album art.

For some reason, visual art and vinyl records have become inseparably attached. So as much as people love the sound of vinyl records, they love the visual experience of the album as well.

Young People Are Turning To Vinyl

Whether it is a rejection of all things tech or a desire for a more simpler life, the fact remains that even young people are buying vinyl records. The Stereophonics, Daft Punk and, Courtineers are some of the top selling records. This suggests a young demographic is mainly purchasing vinyl records as well.

Whatever the case, it has become apparently obvious that vinyl records and their counterpart players are here for a long time to come. 8 Tracks, Cassettes, and other forms of music delivery are down for the count, but vintage record players and the people who love them are still up and fighting for the hearts of music lovers worldwide.

Best Portable Vintage Record Players

When you are talking portability with vintage record players, you are not talking about a walkman or something that you can just put in your pocket. Portable means suitcase style record players. You can pack them up and take them with you. Here are some of the best suitcase style portable record players we found.

Our Review

If you’re only beginning your journey as a collector of vinyl records, you’re going to want to familiarize yourself with Innovative Technology, a master of the Victrola style.

In the time that has elapsed since Innovative Technology opened for business, it has become one of the premier manufacturers of record players in the world and has managed to remain on top of the mountain through a series of unique releases, each more innovative (pun intended) than the last.

This portable suitcase turntable is one of Innovative Technology’s best-selling record players and it isn’t all that difficult to see why. This record player sells for well under $100, yet it boasts the sound capabilities of a far more expensive model.

With the Innovative Technology Victrola Portable Suitcase Turntable, you’ll be able to experience your favorite songs and albums as they were meant to be heard, regardless of your budget or location.

Pros

  • This record player’s suitcase design allows it to be taken on vacations and road trips, so you’ll never be without your music.
  • With its built-in Bluetooth, the Innovative Technology Victrola Portable Suitcase Turntable can be used to play music directly from your smartphone.
  • This record player is available in nearly two dozen colors, so you’re guaranteed to find a style that suits you.

Cons

  • Some owners of this record player have reported reduced sound quality when listening through headphones.
  • If possible, you should store this record player in a dark room as its base has a tendency to warp.

Bottom Line

For those who are looking to dip their toes in vinyl records and don’t want to drop hundreds of dollars on an overly-fancy vintage record player, the Innovative Technology Victrola Portable Suitcase Turntable is the way to go.

With a sound quality superior to almost every other record player in its price range, it combines the best of modern sound technology with nostalgic design techniques to give all who purchase it the perfect listening experience.

It's stylish suitcase design means it will look just as good in your living room as it will on the nylon floor of a tent. Although, getting power to a tent might be problematic. 🙂

CMC Portable Bluetooth Turntable Review

CMC Portable Bluetooth Turntable

Price: $99.99

Features

  • Three speeds. (33, 45, 78 RPM)
  • Portable suitcase design topped off with an easy-carry handle.
  • Built-in stereo speakers.
  • 7.2 pounds in weight.
  • Built-in Bluetooth and 3.5mm AUX input.
  • Headphone jack.
  • SD card slot and USB port.
  • Multiple color options.
  • Next/Previous Song function.
  • RCA output jack.

Our Review

As innovative as the individuals on the Innovative Technology design team can be, they weren’t the only ones to utilize a suitcase design to turn the traditional turntable into a portable sound system. The good folks over at CMC had a similar idea, out of which rose the CMC Portable Bluetooth Turntable.

This vintage record player is arguably the most impressive suitcase turntable on the market, largely owing to its Bluetooth capabilities. Unlike a lot of its competitors, the CMC Portable Bluetooth Turntable can be connected to devices via both Bluetooth and USB, so your road trip listening won’t be limited to however many bulky vinyl records you can cram into the trunk of your car.

It also comes equipped with an SD card slot, making it possible to enjoy your saved music with your friends or when listening on your own through the convenience of the built-in headphone jack.

Pros

  • A lot of suitcase turntables cannot be connected to an exterior sound system. With its RCA output, the CMC Portable Bluetooth Turntable is not one of them.
  • This record player features a Next/Previous Song function, taking the hassle out of skipping between tunes.
  • CMC had the foresight to include a replacement needle with this record player, so you won’t have to worry about diminishing performance.

Cons

  • Despite its relatively basic design, a lot of people seem to have trouble navigating the controls of this record player.
  • Many have complained about CMC’s customer support department is unhelpful and uninterested.

Bottom Line

Although it’s relatively basic as a record player, the CMC Portable Bluetooth Turntable does what it is supposed to do and it does it well. It has long been a popular choice among those searching for birthday and Christmas presents for music fans and is always very warmly received.

You may be understandably turned off by the price of this record player, which is ever so slightly higher than that of a similar product from Innovative Technology.

That being said, those who have spent the nearly $100 the CMC Portable Bluetooth Turntable generally goes for have rarely regretted their decision.

Our Review

The goal of MUSITREND has always been to produce the perfect turntable, one that could be embraced by both those old enough to remember when vinyl was the premier source of sound and those young enough to view it as a retro alternative to digital downloads.

It’s not an easy goal to achieve, but with the MUSITREND Vintage 3-Speed Suitcase Turntable, the brand has gotten closer than ever before.

What’s really great about the MUSITREND Vintage 3-Speed Suitcase Turntable is that it manages to combine the suitcase turntable design which has risen to prominence in recent years with the wood finish of a classic record player.

Its semi-retro design is complemented by modern technology, which makes it possible to enjoy all kinds of audio

. Those with large record collections will revel in this turntable’s ability to convert old LPs into digital files, a feature not often seen in suitcase turntables.

Pros

  • The MUSITREND Vintage 3-Speed Suitcase Turntable requires very little effort to set up and is essentially plug and play. It even comes with a 45 RPM adapter, so you can listen to every record in your collection without additional purchases.

Cons

  • This record player lacks in the bass department. And there are few things worse than too much treble. Take it from a former professional bass player! 🙂
  • The wood finish can be easily damaged and requires regular dusting to avoid staining.

Bottom Line

MUSITREND may be something of a newcomer when it comes to the vintage record player industry, but it has already established itself as one of the top brands around.

Through its remarkable dedication to quality and determination to provide customers with the best experience possible, MUSITREND has brought company founder Kerry Hyman several steps closer to uniting the world through vinyl.

Whether you’re a vinyl veteran looking to feed a decades-old addiction or an LP novice trying to understand what all the fuss is about, the MUSITREND Vintage 3-Speed Suitcase Turntable will give you everything you need and then some.

Top Vintage Turntable With MP3 Recorder

Many of us have albums and singles that have seen better days. We know that we need to convert the music on them before they won't play anymore. That is why we included vintage record players that would record the music into an MP3 music file on a flash drive. Here is the one we recommend for the best price.

1byone Stereo Turntable Review

1byone Stereo Turntable

Price: $49.99

Features

  • Classic wood finish.
  • Clear protective dust cover.
  • Vinyl-to-MP3 recording capabilities.
  • Three speeds. (33, 45, 78 RPM)
  • RCA output to connect to home sound system.
  • USB port to play most audio files.
  • Front-facing stereo speakers for full-spectrum sound.
  • Easy-to-change stylus.
  • Easy-to-use front panel with playback controls.
  • 45 RPM adapter.

Our Review

When the folks on the 1byone design team began work on the 3-Speed Stereo Turntable, their goal was to produce a record player that took that classic 1940s design and brought it kicking and screaming into the future, where it would be met by contemporary style and manufacturing to create a record player for the 21st century.

It seemed like an almost impossible task, but one look at the 1byone 3-Speed Stereo Turntable shows that they did what they set out to do and then some.

This vintage record player boasts the unforgettable wood finish of the record players of yesteryear and compliments it with a belt-drive operation that minimizes, if not completely eradicates, vibrations during listening.

On top of that, the 1byone 3-Speed Stereo Turntable offers vinyl-to-MP3 recording, so you can transfer every record in your collection to digital files on your mobile devices for listening on the go.

Pros

  • The 1byone 3-Speed Stereo Turntable comes fitted with easy-to-use playback controls, making it a great choice for those who struggle with modern technology.
  • With its front-facing stereo speakers, this record player promises a comprehensive listening experience.
  • The stylish wood finish makes for a durable exterior and protects all vital components from knocks and bumps.

Cons

  • Despite its built-in USB port, this record player cannot be used to enjoy audio files from typical Apple devices.
  • This record player works best with recently issued vinyl and is not ideal for those looking to play their records from the 70s and 80s.

Bottom Line

Despite its expert design, multiple innovative features, and beautiful wood finish, the 1byone 3-Speed Stereo Turntable is one of the least expensive record players on the market. This price is more a reflection of the humility of the 1byone brand and not, as many have incorrectly assumed, an indication of poor sound quality.

While it admittedly won’t be able to hang with a $500 model, this record player has everything you need and more to enjoy a solo listening session or a pleasant evening gathered around with your friends, drinking a few beers and playing each other your favorite records.

Best Retro Record Players With Bluetooth

Do you want to hook up your Ipad, Computer, Cell Phone, or MP3 player to your record player and play your song lists? Do you want to use earbuds to listen to your music? Then these vintage record players are the best choice for you.

Our Review

I mentioned a little earlier on that those of you who are new to records and record players should familiarize yourselves with Innovative Technology. I wasn’t kidding. This is the second Innovative Technology record player to appear on this list and its inclusion is totally justified.

In terms of price, the Innovative Technology Victrola 6-in-1 Entertainment Center is the middle ground between the Innovative Technology Victrola Portable Suitcase Turntable that started this list and the Innovative Technology Victrola 8-in-1 Wooden Music Center that we will look at below.

It sells for under $100, but offers a performance very similar to that of the 8-in-1 Wooden Music Center. Within its beautiful wood finish rests a CD player, a cassette player, and an FM radio.

Although it doesn’t boast the versatility of its 8-in-1 counterpart, it does allow audiophiles to connect their smart devices via Bluetooth and an AUX input.

Pros

  • Unlike some competing products, the Innovative Technology Victrola 6-in-1 Entertainment Center can be connected to most Apple devices.
  • With Bluetooth capabilities up to 33 feet, this record player can play music from a device that isn't even in the room.
  • This record player can be easily connected to an external sound system, though few customers have had reason to do so.

Cons

  • The cassette player with which this record player comes equipped does not feature an automatic rewind option.
  • Some who have purchased this record player online have seen it damaged during shipping, so make sure you inspect it carefully when it arrives.

Bottom Line

It’s difficult to think of a reason not to purchase the Innovative Technology Victrola 6-in-1 Entertainment Center. I mean, sure, the cassette player’s lack of an automatic rewind function might be a bit of a pain in the neck, but who really listens to cassettes these days anyway?

It’s a tad on the fragile side, but that won’t be a problem with proper care and maintenance. If you can overlook those minor drawbacks, what you see instead is an incredibly flexible record player which offers almost all the features of some popular high-end models at a fraction of the price.

Innovative Technology 50’s Retro Record Player Review

Innovative Technology 50’s Retro Record Player

Price: $82.99

Features

  • Retro 50’s design.
  • Bluetooth connectivity up to 33 feet.
  • Built-in CD player.
  • Vinyl-to-MP3 recording capabilities.
  • Three speeds. (33 ⅓, 45, 78 RPM)
  • AM/FM radio with backlit tuner.
  • Headphone jack and 3.5mm AUX input.
  • Connects to external sound system.
  • Weight of 10.9 pounds.
  • Built-in stereo speakers.

Our Review

Okay, we’re going back to our friends over at Innovative Technology for this one. This record player is actually a little different to what Innovative Technology generally puts out and it certainly is like no other vintage record player featured on this list.

Rather than attempting to imitate the record players of the 20s, 30s, and 40s, this record player is modeled after its 1950’s predecessors.

The Innovative Technology Victrola 50’s Retro Record Player invokes in all who listen to it a nostalgia for leather jackets, greasy diners, and even greasier hair. It recreates so perfectly the shining record players of mid-20th century America that it almost feels wrong to use it to play anything other than Four Seasons records.

Of course, with its CD player, AM/FM radio, and wireless capabilities, the Innovative Technology Victrola 50’s Retro Record Player can be used to listen to any music you want.

Pros

  • The Innovative Technology Victrola 50’s Retro Record Player can be connected to your laptop or PC via USB for MP3 conversion.
  • A 45 RPM adapter comes included with this record player.
  • This record player is available in a number of colors, all reminiscent of the thunder-like paint jobs of the 1950s.

Cons

  • Although this record player can be connected to an external sound system, it must be done using the headphone jack, which means the sound quality will likely be lacking.
  • This record player isn’t particularly sturdy and is prone to wobbling even when placed on a flat surface.

Bottom Line

Although the 60s brought us the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan, the argument can be made that music reached its peak in the 1950s.

If you’re one of the millions of people around the world who considers the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash to be the pinnacle of rock and roll, there are few better ways to show it than with this record player.

The Innovative Technology Victrola 50’s Retro Record Player is all of the most electrifying aspects of the 1950s fused with the most convenient parts of modern technology.

Top Classic Record Players With Radios

Finally for the vintage buff in your family, these vintage players come with an AM/FM analog radio that will give you the vintage sound you listened to when you were a kid. You will think you are listening to Casey Kasem's American Top 40 every time you turn it on.

Our Review

This is the second product from Innovative Technology to be featured on this list and it serves only to further strengthen the brand’s place as one of the finest manufacturers of vintage record players in the world.

The Innovative Technology Victrola 8-in-1 Bluetooth Wooden Music Center is a departure from the simplistic design of the suitcase turntable we looked at early on, but it offers the same superior sound and design quality vinyl enthusiasts have come to expect from the brand.

This isn’t so much a record player as it is a music center, as the name suggests. As well as vinyl records, this turntable can be used to listen to CDs, radio, and even those long-forgotten cassette tapes you have stored in your attic.

All you Spotify subscribers can easily enjoy your downloaded music over the device’s comprehensive speakers using its built-in Bluetooth or its 3.5mm AUX input.

Pros

  • This record player boasts vinyl-to-MP3 recording capabilities, which means you’ll be able to store all of your favorite records as audio files for easy listening.
  • With an AM/FM radio mode, the Victrola 8-in-1 Bluetooth Wooden Music Center can entirely replace your radio.
  • The full-function remote control makes it possible to switch between songs and albums without ever leaving your seat.

Cons

  • This is most definitely not a portable record player and cannot be taken on the road.
  • This record player cannot be hooked up to an external sound system, which may be a deal breaker for some audiophiles.

Bottom Line

The Innovative Technology Victrola 8-in-1 is a music fan’s dream. It allows you to listen to all forms of audio, meaning you’ll be able to listen to your entire music collection and track, and how your preferences have evolved from your first vinyl record to your latest digital download.

As a piece of furniture, this record player is simply sublime. Innovative Technology has produced a number of variants, ranging from a modest black model to a stylish oak alternative. All sell for around $120, so you won’t have to break the bank to get the perfect combination of sound and elegance.

Our Review

Sylvania is one of the most popular manufacturers of electronics in the world and has been since it was founded in 1961. In the time that has passed since it opened its doors, Sylvania has produced everything from car headlights to portable DVD players. It only makes sense, then, that the Sylvania 5-in-1 Nostalgic Turntable would be featured on this list of the top ten vintage record players.

Despite its relatively low price, the Sylvania 5-in-1 Nostalgic Turntable boasts a multitude of features and promises many years of stellar performance to all those who purchase it.

As well as playing recently released vinyl and getting the best out of older records, this record player has the ability to play CDs and cassette tapes.

  • This record player can be set up and mastered with ease, regardless of your familiarity with modern technology.
  • Because of the brand’s track record, you can be sure you are getting a fantastic product when you buy something stamped with the Sylvania name.

Cons

  • This record player is available in only one color, which leaves little room for customization.
  • Although this record player can be used to convert records to digital files, it takes far more persistence than is worthwhile.

Bottom Line

If you have used any of Sylvania’s products before, you are no doubt aware that the brand has a remarkable level of dedication to the quality of the goods which it produces.

Just like every other product Sylvania has given the world since its 1961 founding, the Sylvania 5-in-1 Nostalgic Turntable meets and, in many cases, exceeds the standards set by models from competing brands.

This record player can be purchased for well under $100 but it is as worthy of attention from those with hundreds of dollars to spend as it is from those working off a smaller budget.

  • Wooden acoustic cabinet.
  • Fully automatic belt-driven turntable.
  • Three speeds. (33 ⅓, 45, 78 RPM)

  • Weight of 15 pounds.
  • Easy-to-use controls and comprehensive instruction manual.

Our Review

For more than 100 years, Electrohome has been among the top names in the record player industry. For pretty much the entirety of that century, Electrohome has been at the forefront of turntable technology, owing, in no small part, to the dedication and vision of the great minds who make up its design team.

The Electrohome Winston 3-in-1 Classic Turntable may just be the masterpiece of that design team. It recreates perfectly the record players which Electrohome and other brands would have been producing in the 1920s and 30s, and looks as though you’re going to hear the voice of Orson Welles pouring out of it the moment you turn it on.

Despite looking like something you would see in an antique store or your great-aunt’s house, the Electrohome Winston 3-in-1 Classic Turntable has the ability to play CDs and can be connected to a variety of smart devices.

Pros

  • The speakers with which this record player is fitted with are remarkably powerful. Combined with the real wood acoustic chamber that houses them, they create the perfect listening experience.
  • The conical-shaped sapphire-tipped ceramic needle delicately glides over all records without leaving even the slightest trace.
  • With its comprehensive instructions manual, the Electrohome Winston 3-in-1 Classic Turntable is perfect for those who have never used such a device before

Cons

  • This record player is a little larger than average, so make sure you have the room for it before making the purchase.
  • Wobbling is a common problem with this record player.

Bottom Line

If you long to experience life in the 1920s and 30s, the Electrohome Winston 3-in-1 is a good place to start.

While it won’t help you relive the fallout from World War One or give you a first-hand account of the Great Depression, it will allow you to listen to the music which guided humanity through those dark periods and into better times.

Its powerful speakers can take even the oldest records from your grandfather’s collection and make them sound brand new. The gentle needle ensures no harm comes to your records, no matter how many times you play them.

Our Review

This is the second product from Electrohome to be featured on this list. It’s also the final vintage record player we’ll be looking at today and it’s a great way to wrap things up.

As the name suggests, the Electrohome Signature Vinyl Record Player is Electrohome’s flagship record player and it isn’t hard at all to see why Electrohome wants people to think of this product when they think of the brand.

The Electrohome Signature Vinyl Record Player boasts everything you could want in a modern day record player and more. Within its handcrafted real wood cabinet, you will find a CD player, an AM/FM radio, and an AUX input for listening to your Spotify library.

The artists over at Electrohome put in hours of hard work when crafting this model and came out on the other end with perhaps the finest vintage record player on the market today.

  • Although malfunctions with this record player are rare, it is backed by a one year warranty should its performance decline prematurely.
  • With two speakers per channel, this record player promises clear audio, whether you’re playing some vinyl or relaxing with the radio.

Cons

  • The sapphire-tipped needle with which this record player comes fitted can be a bit of a challenge to replace.
  • Selling for close to $200, this is the most expensive record player on our list.

Bottom Line

I understand that the price of the Electrohome Signature Vinyl Record Player may turn some people off the product, especially when a perfectly acceptable alternative can be purchased for $100 less.

That being said, I can’t think of a single record player that I have experimented with in the past five years that has been half as impressive as this one.

The immense speakers with which this record player comes fitted are rarely found in models of its size. This fact, combined with its handcrafted wood cabinet, puts this record player head and shoulders above the rest in my book.

How To Record Vinyl Records So They Will Play On A Computer

Whether you grew up listening to vinyl records like me, or you have just discovered the joy of listening to this fantastic genre of audio recordings, you probably have thought about how to convert the music on vinyl records to digital recordings.

By digitizing your vinyl collection you enable yourself to listen to these recordings on your computer, laptop, smartphone or MP3 player. You are able to take them with you!

Your own recordings will sound vastly superior to the compressed MP3 files you can buy online and many of the songs you have on vinyl are not even available.

So take a moment as I explain to you how you can take all the music you love on vinyl and transfer it to digital.

3 Ways To Digitize Your Vinyl Records

There are 3 methods you can use to convert your vinyl records to digital files. I will list them in order of simplicity.

  1. You can use an all in one record player like the vintage record players I have reviewed here.
  2. Use a USB turntable and audio software to record your favorite vinyls.
  3. Use an analog turntable with an adapter cable and audio software to record your old records.

I will briefly go over each method and point out the benefits of each method.

Digitizing Your Vinyl Records With Today's Vintage Record Players

Using one of today's vintage record players is by far the simplest method of converting your vinyl records. All you have to do is play the record and use the built in electronics to record your music to CD or MP3. The best vintage record players come with both a CD player/recorder and a flash drive port to record or play your music.

The key benefit of this method is simplicity.

Converting Your Vinyl With A USB Turntable

Many people convert their old vinyl records with a USB turntable. This method is a little more complicated but most people who are computer literate will have no problem using this method.

You have to connect your USB turntable to your computer using a USB cable. You then have to use audio software like Audacity to record the music. It is free to download and comes with many features.

The main benefit to using this method is control. You can adjust the volume level of the recording, filter out the noise, and name your files whatever you want.

Using An Analog Turntable To Convert Your Vinyl Records To Digital Music

Many people on a tight budget use this method to save their vinyl record collection to digital. It is by far the least expensive method because they do not need to upgrade their record player to an all in one vintage record player or a USB turntable. However it does take a couple of extra steps.

You need to buy an RCA to 1/8" adapter cable. You plug the RCA cable your turntable always has used into the adapter cable. You then plug the adapter cable into the line in port of your computer.

Another option is to buy a RCA to USB converter and follow the same process.

Once you have connected the RCA outputs of your turntable to your computer using one of those adapters, then you can go ahead and use the same program I talked about above to record your vinyl records.

Here is a great video explaining the process.

Well there you have it. If you are like me and need to keep the process simple, then I invite you to check out the all in one vintage record player reviews I have done and get one of those and save yourself a lot of time and hassle when you record your vinyl records and convert them to digital.

The short answer is this. Give a thorough cleaning right before using the record for the first time, and then lightly clean it before and after every use.

However there really is a lot more involved than this. Here are some helpful tips that will enable you to keep your vinyl records in great shape for years to come.

  • Clean your vinyl records with a carbon fiber brush before and after each use.
  • Don't use crazy homemade solutions or methods. Play it safe.

If you are an audiophile then cleaning your vinyl records approaches an art. You may even consider purchasing a vinyl record vacuum cleaner to get every speck of debris off of your vinyl.

However for the rest of us everyday Joe's, we just want to keep our vinyl records in good shape. Just like with any other fine product, there are those out there that will try to sell you a miracle cure with their proven scientific formula. You know, like the ones for hair care or wrinkle removal.

Instead of following after a miracle system, here are some basic guideline for keeping your records clean for many years to come.

Light Cleaning

The most effective way to keep your records clean is to use a carbon fiber brush before and after each play of your vinyl record. Just place your record on the turntable, lightly place your brush on the record and turn the turntable a couple of rotations while letting the brush clean your record.

Don't turn on the turntable. Do this manually.

Medium Cleaning

When you first buy your vinyl record or if it has been left out in the open and has gotten dirty, then you need to do a medium cleaning. Most people recommend using a distilled de-ionized water solution for cleaning. However some recommend a alcohol based cleaning solution.

I personally do not recommend an alcohol based solution. The alcohol can take the sheen off of your records and long term use can damage your records.

In order to do a deep cleaning, place your record on the turntable. Dampen your lint free cloth with your distilled water solution. Lightly place the cloth on your record and slowly turn your record a couple of rotations.

Give your record time to dry before playing.

Here is a great video about this method.

Deep Cleaning

For the deepest cleaning available, experts recommend using a record vacuum cleaner. The library of congress has one of these machines to care for the millions of vinyl records they store. However this method is only for the vinyl record aficionado. Their cost is more than the average person would want to pay.

How Often Should You Clean Your Vinyl Records

How often you clean your records depends on your habits. If you run a carbon fiber brush over your records before and after every use, then your need to clean your records more thoroughly diminishes. If you are less cautious with your records then the need will increase.

Make sure you keep your records in a clean sleeve. Make sure you store your records in a clean space. And don't leave your records out in the open for hours on end. You need to put them up after you use them.

I hope these tips on keeping your records clean will help you keep your records in great shape and they will provide you with years of enjoyment in the future.
