Many people ask me after reading my article on nanny cams, how to install a nanny camera. It may seem like a daunting task but it really isn't that hard once you have the steps lined out for you.
I would not consider myself Tim the Toolman Taylor, but installing a nanny cam is does not take a lot of expertise in home improvement. Here is a simple outline on how you can install your new nanny camera.
How To Install A Nanny Camera In Your Home
Obviously before you install a nanny cam, you have to own one to install. I highly recommend that you buy a wireless nanny cam. You will save yourself the very time consuming and difficult process of running video cables from your nanny cam to your computer viewing station.
I am not going to give instructions for running cables. When I was young I used to run cables for video feeds in hospitals and apartment complexes. I would have to write an epic blog post to teach you the right way to run cables. So save yourself the hassle. Buy a wireless nanny cam.
Gather Your Tools
The first thing you need to do is gather your tools. It will not take a lot. You will need a drill, an electric or cordless screwdriver, and a stud finder. A stud finder is a tool that tells you where the wood studs are in your wall or ceiling.
Choose Your Location
Position your camera so it can see the room.
Next you need to choose your location. If you are using a wall or ceiling mount nanny cam, you need to decide which area of the room you want to record. If you want to record your child's bed and play area, mount it away from that area and point it towards that area.
Normally that means that you will place your camera in a top corner of the room.
Find Your Studs
Next you need to find your studs. You do not want to mount your camera by just drilling holes in the sheet rock or paneling. If you do, you will find that your camera will eventually come loose and fall off the wall or ceiling.
Use the stud finder to find your studs in your wall or ceiling and drill a hole using a drill bit that is smaller than your screw size. Once that is done, screw the nanny cam mount onto the wall or ceiling using the screws provided. After it is firmly secure, attach the nanny cam and adjust it so that it points in the direction you desire.
Here is where you save yourself a bunch of time and work. Hopefully you have been smart and bought a wireless nanny cam. If not, then you need to run wires to your computer receiving station.
If you have been smart, plug it in to a electrical wall socket for power, then turn on your nanny cam. Now you are ready to connect it to your home Wi-Fi network
Connect To Your Network
Now you need to connect your camera to your wireless router. You individual camera will give you instructions on how to do this. Most wireless routers will handle up to 32 connections. This should be more than adequate for your nanny cam system.
Once you have connected your nanny camera to you wireless network, now you are ready to test it and make sure it works properly.
Test Your Connections
Many nanny cams come with an app or program to monitor your camera. They allow for multiple cameras. Download the app or program onto the device or multiple devices that you will be monitoring your nanny cams with. I suggest you use your home computer and your mobile phone.
Once you have downloaded the app or program, boot up the program and connect the program with your wireless system. You should be able to see the different feeds of your nanny cams.
Inform Your Nanny
Finally, if you are using a nanny cam that records audio, you need to be informed about the laws of recording audio in your state. Many states do not allow you to record audio of people without their consent. It is always wise to inform your nanny that you have a video and audio monitoring system in your home.
Failure to do this could open you up to civil lawsuits. Better to be safe than sorry.
