For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better.
The Apostle Paul wrote these words while in prison. However he did not write them to complain of his troubles, but instead wrote them to encourage the Philippian church. He is making a very profound statement concerning the way of life for the Christian. He is showing us a more excellent way.
Take just a moment and imagine yourself sitting in prison because you were a Christian who was not ashamed to speak about Jesus to non Christians. You would have a choice. You could give up and hope to die, or you could believe that God was going to deliver you out of the situation. The Apostle Paul believed that although going to be with Jesus was something that was to be desired, he actually believed that God was going to deliver him because there was still more work to do.
Many times in life we get caught up in our own plans and ideas. We want things to turn out the way that is best for us. Paul was stating that to go be with Jesus was what was the easiest and best thing for him but that he did not believe that was God’s plan.
I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me. 24 But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live. 25 Knowing this, I am convinced that I will remain alive so I can continue to help all of you grow and experience the joy of your faith.
That is what he meant when he said that living means living for Christ. He places his wants and desires down and instead lives out what is best for Jesus and His church. So this morning I want to encourage you to stop for a moment and reflect upon this truth and how you can apply it to your life.
To Live For Christ Meditation
What are the plans you have in your life that may not be the best plans for Christ and those He loves? Are you struggling with not getting your own way? Do you get upset when things change in your life that you did not plan for? Could it be that you have taken control of your life and your destiny instead of placing your life and destiny in the hands of Jesus? Are you living for Christ alone?
Living for Christ Prayer
Dear Jesus, I surrender. I give you my life, my destiny and my plans. I am making a conscious decision today to live for what is best for you and your people. I lay everything that hinders me from doing this at your feet. I am no longer my own boss. I surrender to your lordship in my life. In your precious name.
