What is Love in the Bible
What is real love? It is a question that has been asked throughout the centuries. Some say it is an emotion, some say it is a choice. I find that it is a little of both, but the foundation is in the choice.
Love is Patient, Love is Kind Bible Verse
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
How could God command us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, unless we could choose to do that? Emotions are fickle, they come and go. If you don’t believe me, stay married for a while. There will be times you do not feel the pitter pat of your heart when Mr. Right, or Miss America walks into the room. In fact there will be many times that you just choose to love rather than go by what you are feeling at the moment.
Why Did Paul Say Love is Patient, Love is Kind?
Paul gives us a great example in Ephesians Chapter 5 about love. He said to be an imitator of God. Well how did God love? What did He do to show love?
We all remember the verse we learned in Sunday School. For God so loved the world that he……..? You got it! He gave! One of the ways that we show we love is that we give. We give of our time, our resources, our life. When is the last time you gave love to the important people in your life by actually giving of yourself?
Another way we imitate God is by imitating Jesus. Jesus said that He did nothing that He did not see the Father do. So what did Jesus do? Jesus served! He said that He did not come to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. Matt 20:28 When we choose to serve people, rather than serve ourselves we are imitating God and showing love.
Another way we love is by dying to ourselves and our selfish desires. Remember Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane? He said “Not my will but Thine be done.” Do you honestly think Jesus wanted to go to the cross? Do you think that the human side of Him was not terrified of what it would be like? Of course He was! In fact the bible says that He was so distressed that He sweated drops of blood.
Can we live out love is patient, love is kind?
In all honesty, if we are to live the passage where it says Love is Patient, Love is Kind, then we are going to have to do these 3 things. You cannot be patient if you are not willing to give of yourself and time. You cannot be kind if you are self serving rather than other serving, and you definitely cannot follow through with the rest of the attributes of love unless you are other’s centered rather than self centered.
Is it worth it? You betcha! Love never fails!
Now that is something to think about!
