Are You Plagued By Fear?
Fear can plague many people. Overcoming fear can be extremely difficult. Some people have to deal with fear on a daily basis. I am not an expert but I have had to deal with fear on more than one occasion and so I thought I would share with you some of the issues I dealt with in overcoming fear. If you are struggling with fear and anxiety, please understand, you are not alone. Not only are there thousands upon thousands of people who are struggling with overcoming fear, but there were many people in the Bible who also had to deal with fear and learn the principles in overcoming fear. So this is not a something that makes you weird or out of place, it is just an area in your life that has yet to come under the rule and reign of Jesus. I hope that as I share with you some of the things I have learned about overcoming fear, that you will see the path to freedom from your fear and anxiety.
Principles In Overcoming Fear.
There is a reason why I am sharing with you principles in overcoming fear rather than giving you a formula or some type of cliche’ pat answer from a Christian perspective. Christianity is not about rules or formula’s but instead it is about a personal and intimate relationship with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. It is that King and Lord that has the power and authority to handle your fear. So all the principles that I am going to share with you have to deal with your relationship with Him. It is in the cultivation of that relationship that you will find your own personal path to overcoming fear.
The perfect love principle in overcoming fear.
17 And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. 18 Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love. 19 We love each other because he loved us first
As you can see in this passage, love expels fear. In this case it is talking about the fear of judgement and punishment. Now the primary point of this passage is that love casts out the fear of judgment and punishment. However the principle is greater than that. There are many types of judgement that people fear. Not only do some people fear the judgement of God, which does plague even Christians, but there are people who fear the judgement of family members, or peer groups, or society and culture in general. In each of these cases, love will expel that fear. When you understand that your heavenly Father is not sitting in heaven with a big hammer ready to smite you on the head if you mess up, then you lose the unhealthy fear of judgement and punishment. When you understand how deep and wide and unconditional the love of God is, then the fear of judgement or even punishment from family, friends, and even society loses it’s grip. It does not matter. The reason you fear the judgement of others is the fear that you will lose their love or that they will no longer accept you. When you come to understand that you have the love from the only one that really matters, the one who will love you unconditionally with no strings attached, then the fear of losing love from others diminishes and you are on your way to overcoming fear.
So the way you apply this principle is this. You need to come to an understanding of how much Jesus really loves you. It is easy to understand that Jesus loves the world. It is even easy to believe that Jesus loves the other people in your church or community but it is not as easy to understand how much Jesus loves you personally. You need to start asking, seeking, and knocking on the Lord’s door and asking Him to show you both in His word and in your personal life how much He really loves you. Ask Him to reveal His love to you. Remember you have a personal relationship with Him. Not only do you need to let Him know that you love Him, but you need to hear it back. Just as in a marriage relationship, not only do you need to express love, but you need to know you are loved as well. Ask Him to show you how to see and know that the love He has for you is real. When you do this then you are well on your way to overcoming fear.
