I have been wanting to do a series for a while on Christian blogging tips. To me Christian blogging is an awesome way for everyday people to reach the world for Jesus. Part of what I do as a pastor is to equip people for the work of the ministry. Now before you get all religious on my about the word ministry, let me say that it only means giving people what you have been given. I am not talking about seminary, Bible college, or some paid staff position with the title “Rev.” before your name. Each and every one of us has a ministry we can give to the world because each and every one of us has the Spirit of Jesus living on the inside of us. So to me, helping you promote your Christian blog is something that fits right in with my calling to equip people.
I am no expert on Christian blogging.
Let me start off by saying that I am no expert. I am just a pastor who wanted to help people so I did hours upon hours of research to figure out how to get my blog noticed by Google. I have made many mistakes, and have learned from those mistakes, and hope that my errors and my successes help you get your blog noticed and so you can achieve your dreams for your blog. I am still a very small fish in a very big pond but because of these things I have learned I have 1000 people a day come to this website run by a pastor of a very small church in rural Wyoming. I am not the pastor of some big mega-church or some TV evangelist. I am just an ordinary guy serving an extraordinary God.
I will be providing you with a bunch of resources and my thoughts on them. Some of them are affiliate links. I debated whether or not to include affiliate links. (an affiliate link is a link that if you buy something, I will get a commission on it). I chose to go ahead and use affiliate links because whether or not you choose to buy something is your choice and rather than no one getting a kickback on it, it is better for someone to benefit from it. I spent literally 2 months of in-depth research and testing of a lot of products to be able to recommend the few affiliate links that I will be sharing. The laborer is worthy of his hire. LOL However every link I share with you also will have either a free trial or a free way to use it. So again I am not just giving you stuff to buy, but tools to use.
Tips For Starting Your Christian Blog
Choosing your blogging platform
When I first started out, I knew nothing about blogging or website promotion or how search engines worked or the massive amounts of media and tools available to promote a blog. I got my idea from reading a blog post one day on a Christian Finance website called Christian Personal Finance entitled How to Make Money Blogging (non affiliate link) and by watching a friend spend hours cruising blogs on a topic she was interested in. I thought well why can’t I blog and make a side income off of it as well? So as they say ignorance is bliss and I started looking for a way to blog. Since I didn’t know a darn thing and since I needed something that was easy to use, I ended up using Blogger as the platform for my blog. That was my first newbie mistake.
Blogger is very easy to use, but very search engine unfriendly. I am not sure why since it is owned by Google, but their design and layout is not friendly to helping search engines know what your blog is really about or how to rank it. If I was to do it over again I would use WordPress to start with rather than have to learn how to switch everything over as you can see I finally did. You have to decide what the purpose of your Christian blog is. If you are a mommy blogger that is just looking for a hobby and a way to connect with your social circle, then Blogger works just fine, but if you are looking to make a business or a part-time income from it, then I seriously suggest you invest the money to pay for a domain name and self hosting somewhere else and use WordPress as your blogging platform. The total cost is under $100.00 for the year.
Choosing your domain name
The second thing I did, and at least got partially right is that I bought a domain name. They cost 10 bucks so it is not a big expense. Having your own domain name makes it much easier for you to get ranked for search terms and for giving you authority and page rank from the search engines. If you are using a free Blogger or WordPress domain name like taberstruths.blogspot.com then you are at an extreme disadvantage. Your domain name cannot go with you wherever you may go, and it is looked upon as suspicious by the search engines because it was free and not invested in directly by you.
I chose to make my domain name to be taberstruths.com. Well that is great for having a brand name but lousy for search engines. Who the heck searches for the term taber’s truths? Only people who already know about the blog or possibly an ex-wife or girlfriend. LOL. So my domain name did nothing to help me to rank for anything on the search engines. I would have been much better off to buy the domain name taberstruthschristianblog.com At least then I would have had the words Christian blog in my domain name. However you can overcome this. If you are thoughtful about what you title your individual blog posts, you can still get your key words (words you want to rank in the search engines for) in your url. For instance. I just posted a blog post called Childlike Faith. That term has about 20,000 searches done per month and not very high competition. I did this so I can get search engine recognition from the key words.
