Family Christian Bookstores Releases New Christian Touch Display Tablet

Family Christian Bookstores has released an alternative to the Ipad, Nook, and Kindle. This Christian alternative to these products may interest you, especially if you have kids. This family friendly piece of technology seems to be the kind of thing that will go over well with Christian parents. Personally I like to support any efforts put out by believers to enter in and compete in the technology arena. So when I caught wind of this release by Family Christian bookstores, I wanted to do a review of it. Obviously I haven’t bought one. It isn’t in the budget of the Taber multi-million dollar trust fund that hopefully one day I will find. So I will just give you the details of this new tablet and try to compare it with these other devices.

Details of the new Christian tablet called Edifi.

Our touch display tablet is much more than an e-reader! It’s easy to use and loaded with family-friendly features and FREE apps including Safe Search Wi-Fi web browsing, 27 Bible translations and Christian internet radio. Plus, check email, social network, watch movies, display photos and download ebooks with our Family Christian Reader app preloaded.

How does Edifi stand up against Kindle, Nook, and Ipad?

Pros

  • The price is only $149.00 compared to $169.00 – $249.00 for the others.
  • The battery life is longer.
  • It comes equipped with apps that most Christians would use.
  • It comes with it’s own stand that others charge for.
  • It plays more video formats.

Cons

  • Although the screen is the same size, it does not have the same resolution or pixel depth.
  • It does not come with a flash player
  • It uses a proprietary charger vs. a generic charger.

Other considerations

  • Having safe search is a good thing for kids, and many adults depending on what they use their tablet for, however from what I have found, some of these internet filters sometimes block you from legitimate sites, so I would make sure that it can either be modified or deactivated when needed.
  • I would investigate more concerning warranty and repair work and what type of process is involved since this is put out by a bookstore and not a computer manufacturer.

Take a look at the Edifi on Youtube.

I think this tablet is a no go for a number of reasons. The hardware is simply not up to snuff even for it’s price point. One could simply purchase a cheap Coby tablet with a much better touch screen (the Edifi has a resistive touch screen while most tablets and smart phones these days have what is known as a capacitive touch screen, which is the one with the glass and smooth multi touch opperation. The resistive touch screen in the Edifi is the squishy plasticy type which is much less durable.) and comparable stats otherwise. The Bible is public domain and copies of it on Android tablets are generally free anyway, the Family Christian app is a free app, and the Coby and many other tablets support flash and with the addition of VLC player (also a free app) play roughly any video format you can find. Safe search can also be enabled on any Android tablet. I just don’t see this being a good investment. If I were Christian bookstores, my move would be to select an Android tablet and pre load it with settings and software of this nature and repackage and sell it that way. I think it would be a much better end user experience and much more feasible and cost effective.

      Thanks Matt!
I wasn’t sure what the difference was between the two screens, and I knew that there were many Bible apps out there for free, like youversion. I am not the most tech savvy guy out there. I am still satisfied with my Captain Kirk flip phone. LOL I really appreciate your evaluation on this product.
