Christmas Bible Verses To Put Christ Back In Christmas

picture of a nativity sceneWhy post a list of Christmas Bible verses? Well recently President Obama was reported to have stated that the White House was not putting up a Christmas tree but a holiday tree because America was no longer a Christian nation. Well I don’t know about Mr. Obama’s family but mine is still a Christian family and so I decided to post some of the Christmas scriptures that I have used over the years to keep Christ in our family’s Christmas. I used these to read at the Christmas dinner table, or sometimes during our times of opening gifts, and always during our prayer times. I hope that these Christmas Bible passages will be a blessing to you and your family as you choose to go against the crowd and swim against the current by placing Jesus as the center of your Christmas celebrations by including these Christmas verses.

3 types of Christmas Bible verses.

Bible verses predicting the birth of Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 7:14

14 All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).

Micah 5:2

A Ruler from Bethlehem

2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,

are only a small village among all the people of Judah.

Yet a ruler of Israel will come from you,

one whose origins are from the distant past.

Psalm 72:11

11 All kings will bow before him,

and all nations will serve him.

Isaiah 9:6

6 For a child is born to us,

a son is given to us.

The government will rest on his shoulders.

And he will be called:

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Scriptures containing the Christmas story.

Matthew 1:18-25

The Birth of Jesus the Messiah

18 This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph, her fiancé, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly.

20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

22 All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: 23 “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’”

24 When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. 25 But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.

Matthew 2:1-23

Visitors from the East

Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, 2 “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.”

3 King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem. 4 He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked, “Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?” 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they said, “for this is what the prophet wrote: 6 ‘And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are not least among the ruling cities of Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.”

7 Then Herod called for a private meeting with the wise men, and he learned from them the time when the star first appeared. 8 Then he told them, “Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!”

9 After this interview the wise men went their way. And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were filled with joy! 11 They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

12 When it was time to leave, they returned to their own country by another route, for God had warned them in a dream not to return to Herod.

The Escape to Egypt

13 After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! Flee to Egypt with the child and his mother,” the angel said. “Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

14 That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother, 15 and they stayed there until Herod’s death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “I called my Son out of Egypt.”

16 Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men’s report of the star’s first appearance. 17 Herod’s brutal action fulfilled what God had spoken through the prophet Jeremiah: 18 “A cry was heard in Ramah—weeping and great mourning. Rachel weeps for her children, refusing to be comforted, for they are dead.”

The Return to Nazareth

19 When Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt. 20 “Get up!” the angel said. “Take the child and his mother back to the land of Israel, because those who were trying to kill the child are dead.”

21 So Joseph got up and returned to the land of Israel with Jesus and his mother. 22 But when he learned that the new ruler of Judea was Herod’s son Archelaus, he was afraid to go there. Then, after being warned in a dream, he left for the region of Galilee. 23 So the family went and lived in a town called Nazareth. This fulfilled what the prophets had said: “He will be called a Nazarene.”

Luke 2:1-20

The Birth of Jesus

1 At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. 2 (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. 4 And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. 5 He took with him Mary, his fiancée, who was now obviously pregnant.

6 And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 7 She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.

The Shepherds and Angels

8 That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. 9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, 10 but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! 12 And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”

15 When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. 17 After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. 18 All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, 19 but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. 20 The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.

Christmas passages that tell the reason why Jesus was born.

John 1:6-16

6 God sent a man, John the Baptist, 7 to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. 8 John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. 9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

10 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. 11 He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. 12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.

14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

15 John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’”

16 From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.

Jesus came into the world for a purpose. It wasn’t to start another holiday or to have people celebrate His birthday. He came into the world to give you and I the right to become the children of God. He made it possible to be reborn or born again by God. This Christmas I would like to encourage you that if you have never had that second birth, that born again experience, that you would take a moment to make this the Christmas that you accept the free gift that your heavenly Father gave to you by sending Jesus. Please take a moment to go to the page I have set up for people to meet Jesus. Allow this to be the Christmas season where you heart is softened and opens up to what these Christmas scriptures say. You will not be disappointed, in the least. It will be the best Christmas season you will ever have.

Blessings

Pastor Duke

Thank you for this post, I loved it and its exactly what I needed to read on this Christmas day!

Duke, Thank You for this awesome post and for all of your hard work on this blog! In reference to a previous poster, I don't believe that you were "casting aspersions" upon the Obama family. You were just telling the truth.

"Pastor," I am ashamed of you, casting aspersions upon the Obama family and their faith simply because the National Tree is called a Holiday Tree. The Christmas tree has nothing to do with Christ, it is descended from non-Christian customs, as you are well aware. Jesus Christ Our King was born to bring peace to this world, and taught us to judge not, lest we shall be judged. Our Country is not a Christian nation, it is rightfully a nation of many faiths. Our duty as Christians is to be accepting of and loving toward others, regardless of faith or status, as indeed Our Lord was, and by living our lives by His example so bring others to Him. This I wish for you and your household.

    • Duke Taber says:

Carol, I am sorry you feel that way. Our nation was founded by Christians fleeing religious persecution. A Christmas tree does have pagan roots but has still came to symbolize part of a "Christian" holiday. President Obama, has offended many people of the "Christian" faith by renaming the tree. This is a "Christian" holiday and so what is wrong honoring the faith that founded this nation?

    • Duke Taber says:

And by the way, If President Obama wanted to place a Menorah someplace on White House, I would not have a problem with it. I would have a problem if He wanted to rename it the Holiday Candle Stand.

    • Duke Taber says:

Jennifer Strickland Gilcrease Hmmm. I thought I just did. LOL Something is fishy with my comment program. So here I go again. I stand corrected. It seems that what I had heard is actually an urban myth. However, and I hope both of you ladies would agree with me, that if President Obama, or any other President, tried to rename a religiously orientated symbol, regardless of faith, that it would be wrong. I also would hope that you ladies would agree with me that a nation is not a Christian, or any other religion, nation by governmental edict. It becomes a Christian nation, or any other religion, when the individuals who comprise that nation embrace and practice the principles of Christianity or any other religion. It is when the culture and society of the nation is changed from a heart level due to that religion, that it becomes a nation of Christians, or any other religion.

    • Jennifer Strickland Gilcrease says:

Duke Taber I believe your information is incorrect concerning Obama and the holiday tree. Please refer to the link I posted above.

    • Carol Maier says:

Duke Taber : Sir, I agree with your comment, above, and I am also thankful that you were willing to amend your view. I'm sorry I was snarky in my original post, but I was angry that you seemed to be attacking the Obama family, especially at this time of year. Please accept my apology.

    • Duke Taber says:

Carol Maier No problem. Personally I try to stay out of politics. I am called to serve democrats and republicans, liberals and conservatives, and although I do have my own personal persuasion politically, my primary mission and goal in life is to serve all people. I was under the false assumption that He had done this and as so, as I believer in Jesus, I had to stand up against wrong no matter the political side of the fence they are on. I have done so against conservatives as well.
