An Alternate Source Of Income
As most of you know, my blog is the way I supplement my income as a pastor. I am privileged to be the pastor of a great church in rural Wyoming. It has about 30 people who call it their spiritual home. Unfortunately 30 people are not able, nor do I expect them, to pay a full-time salary. For many years I worked bi-vocationally as a pastor and truck driver. Last winter it became apparent that the hours I was putting in was having a detrimental effect on my physical health. So I stopped driving truck and started blogging. It has been an interesting experience learning how to make money with a Christian blog.
Google Adsense and Christian Blogging
When I first started out blogging I signed up for Google Adsense. The Blogger platform encouraged it and so I signed up. I had no idea how much of a nightmare it was going to be or how in the end it would not be an option that was very profitable. It seriously caused me to do a lot of research and soul-searching. The first thing I noticed was that every two-bit cult and psychic was using adsense to promote their garbage. On day 1 I had to filter out the Mormons and it just got worse from there. I would end up spending hours loading up my blog and hitting refresh and then trying to find the url’s of the ads so I could filter them. It was a royal pain but I could not in good conscience allow cults, witchcraft, and psychics advertise on my blog. Then I had to filter out the ads for soap, insurance quotes, and other non relevant ads. When I was done, I was left with a handful of ads that were from legitimate Christian businesses and organizations that paid very little when a person clicked on them. I emailed adsense numerous times concerning the problems I was having, and did massive amounts of research on how to increase the amount of clicks I received and where to place ads for the best click rates and how to even write posts that attracted higher payouts. Nothing worked and I did not receive 1 reply from my emails to the adsense team. I eventually got fed up and fired them! I am so glad I did and I will tell you why.
(note 9/26/2011 I am trying an experiment with adsense since I have switched to WordPress. If I get better results than I did with Blogger, I will update this post.)
Here is my update on Google Adsense on a Christian blog.
