One of the things I like to do on this website is to put the spotlight on what is happening to our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world. We Americans and others in the western world have too much of a myopic view of what is happening in Christianity. Today I want to introduce you to Shi Weihan. His story is an amazing testimony of strength and courage in the face of horrible oppression and opposition in Communist China. Shi Weihan: A Story of the Persecuted Faithful. Posted on Oct 25, 2012 | by John Evans Weihan's journey into the ranks of the persecuted faithful began decades ago with no faith at all. "Growing up in a communist country, I didn't believe in God in that time," Weihan said over the course of several interviews with Baptist Press in October. "I thought it was like a story, not true." In 1990, a Chinese man named Joshua -- the matchmaker who brought Weihan and his wife Zhang Jing together -- gave a Bible to each of them. "He told me, 'This book is very g[more]
Early in my Christian life I thought I might end up being a foreign missionary. I was greatly influenced by the ministry of Keith Green and he would say that as long as there were people in this world that had not heard of Jesus once, that we had no business evangelizing people who had already heard more than once. As I grew in the Lord, I understood that although Keith's sentiments were heartfelt and had some truth to them, there was more to being a foreign missionary than just the need for people to hear about Jesus. I support foreign missions and missionary groups. I believe that we are in the end times and the sooner we spread the gospel to every tribe, tongue and nation the sooner Jesus will return. Because of that, I wanted to do an article that would both be practical and encourage those of you that are called to be a foreign missionary. How To Become A Foreign Missionary. Obviously I cannot tell you how to become a Baptist Missionary or a Methodist Missionary or an Assembl[more]
These are the types of stories I like to cover. It is reported that 8500 people came to Jesus in Tanzania during an evangelistic event held Aug. 11-12 at Jangwani Grounds and attracted more than 125,000 attendees. The speaker was Evangelist Andrew Palau. In a story I found on CharismaNews, it is reported that over 700 churches cooperated with each other to pull off this event. It is amazing to me to hear of the hunger that is present for Jesus in other countries. When we have an evangelistic event here in the states, it is news when the amount of attenders reaches over 10,000. Can you imagine an event that has 125,000 people? Take a moment to read the excerpts of this story and increase your vision and hunger for what God can do not only for those in other countries but for our country as well. Part of the heart and mission of Taber's Truths is to cover what God is doing around the world. Today I am happy to report that the word of the Lord is spreading in rural China. For those of you that do not understand the situation in China, only "authorized churches" are allowed to sell Bibles. These Bibles cost as much as several weeks salary for the average person living in rural China. If that isn't bad enough, if they had the money to purchase one of these Bibles, they would have to travel to a major city to get one since there are no "authorized churches" in the local communities where they live. That is where this story comes in and it is quite exciting if you ask me. I found the report on Mission Network News and here are some excerpts from that story. Missionaries distribute 24,000 Bibles to believers in rural China President of VOCA Jonathan Brooks says a mission team has been able to distribute Bibles. "We had the wonderful opportunity of passing out 24,000 bibles -- co[more]
I noticed earlier today that I have someone that comes to this website on a regular basis from Sri Lanka. Then later today I found this story about an Assemblies of God pastor in Sri Lanka that was dragged and beaten because he was a Christian. Since I don't believe in coincidences, I felt that I needed to share this story with all of you. Because of the hostility towards Christians that exists in Sri Lanka, his name has not been revealed but there is no reason to believe the story is not true. I found the story at Charisma News. We who are in countries that enjoy the freedom to worship God without retribution need to remember that there are millions of our brothers and sisters in the Lord who face death daily for the faith. We need to stop being so inward centered and look beyond our borders to the plight of the persecuted church. Here are some excerpts from the story I found. This is the type of story I like to bring to your attention. When we seem to have Christian persecution in America on the rise, I find a story about how God is moving to change the hearts of persecutors. This time it is the story of a man who was one of the leaders of Christian persecution in Asia. I am sure that certain aspects of this story have been kept private for the man's own personal safety but irregardless this story is inspiring and has aspects of the conversion of the Apostle Paul himself. I found this story on the Gospel for Asia website.  Here are a few excerpts of the story. Persecutor of Christians in Asia Becomes a Christian. Viraj had his first taste of persecution as a young man—as the one causing it. He and a few friends who were part of an anti-Christian extremist group attacked a mission. They beat pastors and nuns, then burned their belongings and literature. Viraj was so dedicated to his cause that it seemed certain he would never sway. His story turned o[more]
There are times when writing a story leaves a bad taste in my mouth and there are times when sharing news with you is a delight. Well this story is one of those that is a delight. I found it on WND and it is actually a book review but from what I have been hearing from other sources, I believe what is being claimed in this book. Jerry Trousdale is the director of international ministries for City Team International. He has just written a book called  “Miraculous Movements: How Hundreds of Thousands of Muslims Are Falling in Love With Jesus,” I believe that God is at work with the Muslim people and that there truly is revival breaking out in Muslim nations. Here are some excerpts from the book review/story that I found. Muslims leaving Islam and converting to Christianity “There is tremendous dissatisfaction and discouragement among the very people who know the Quran the best and who are themselves desperate for assurance in their own religion,” says Trousdale. Trousdale [more]
Of all the places you or I would think that revival would break out, I highly doubt Iran would be on the top of our list. However, reports coming out of that nation are nothing less than miraculous. I found a story on WND that just blew my mind, and then couple that with the video I am going to show you and you can do nothing except start singing the old worship chorus "Awesome God". Here are some excerpts from the story. Revival breaks out in Iran Author says Americans should be 'on faces praying' The author of a new book, Mideast Beast: The Scriptural Case for an Islamic Antichrist,” says there are things about Iran that few Americans, including American Christians, know. “First, the present regime is on the verge of being toppled. The Iranian people are extremely unhappy with their leadership. There is the very real chance that the present mullocracy could fall in a very short time,” said Joel Richardson, who also has written “The Islamic AntiChrist.”. “Secon[more]
With gay activists screaming about Chik-fil-A and atheists trying to shut down Michael W. Smith and whining about not getting a Sunday discount, you would think that Christianity is some type of horrible religion. In fact the bad press that has been given to the church has even effected the way Christians view their own faith. This was evidenced the other day when I got into a conversation on Facebook with another believer about whether or not the church has the responsibility to speak up against anti-religious bigotry. His view had been tainted by what He saw on CNN and wasn't based on fact. So I decided I wanted to share with you a story I found in the Washington Post about the role that the church has played in stemming the tide in the AIDS epidemic. Here are some excerpts from that story. Since this morning I made it perfectly clear concerning the wrong way to speak to our nation and our world with the story I did about Westboro Baptist church and Fred Phelps being liars, I thought it was only appropriate that I share with you the right way to touch our world and make a difference in people's lives and still speak out concerning tough issues. Franklin Graham recently wrote a column in the Washington Post speaking about how the church should respond to AIDS. I felt it was an excellent article and so I wanted to share it with you. The biggest point He made in my opinion was that you never saw Jesus screening how people got sick. He healed them and told them to go sin no more. I think this model is the correct application of biblical principle. Here are some excerpts from the story. It wasn't until I did the review for the movie that is touring our nation right now called "Father of Lights" that I was made aware of what God is doing in the nation of India. Today I ran across another story that is just awesome about how God is moving among people who are hungry for the power to change their lives. It is a story that comes from CBN News and it shows how they are using a media campaign to touch 10 million lives with the power of the gospel. The "Power to Change" media campaign has been running in Hyderabad where at least 10 million people live. Hyderabad is the silicon valley of India yet they have the same problems that most people face, and they are looking for the answers for how to change their lives. Here is a video and some excerpts from the story. I did a story about his a while ago. It seems that the Wycliffe Bible translators have been omitting references to the trinity in their translations of the Bible geared for Muslim countries. Now it seems that the Presbyterian Church in America has approved some resolutions criticizing Wycliffe for not literally translating the words "Father" and Son". I found this story on Yahoo News. This is just one more step in confronting Wycliffe, in what is in my opinion, a bad policy. As much as we do not want to make understanding the Bible hard, we also do not want to compromise or water down what the scriptures say. It is my opinion that Wycliffe was doing so in their Arabic translations of the Bible. Here is some excerpts from the story. I ran across a video today that I wanted to share with you. I always try to find something to encourage and inspire you in your walk with Jesus and this video of Steve Saint, who has been an innovator and developer of technology to help people spread the gospel in some of the most unreachable areas of the world, fits that category. Here is a man who is working on a project for God to help missionaries and what happens? He gets hit in the head and paralyzed. Does he ask God why or blame  God in some way? Watch the Video! Inspirational video of Steve Saint called "The Next Chapter" Would you be tempted to ask God "Why me"? In all honesty, I know I would be tempted. In fact I have asked that question before. It is not easy to surrender and submit to the will of God in everything. I think it takes great faith. I was touched and inspired by this video. My mind races back to a prayer I prayed while I was in Bible college. "Lord make my latter days greater than my former days." I[more]
Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) just celebrated 75 years of ministry to Children through what they call "Good News Clubs". I am familiar with CEF through the opportunities I had when I was part of ministerial associations and the churches that sponsored Good News Clubs. It is a wonderful program and reaches to the hearts of kids, many of whom do not have Christian parents. It was started by a man named Jesse Irvin Overholtzer in 1937. Now there are over 42,000 Good News Clubs in 180 countries. This is truly an organization that any Christian can support and get involved with. Here is a story I found about this event in their local newspaper called emissourian.com CEF celebrates 75 years of fruitful ministry. Pay your tithe! Invest in the building fund! Give to the outreach fund! Help the youth group go to camp! Give a special offering to this, that, them! Give to missions! It's hard to go to church these days and not hear an uncountable number of giving requests. With so many competing opportunities, who should you bless with your funds? I personally think there are three giving priorities: tithe, pledges, and offerings, and missions can fall under the priorities of pledges and offerings. Of all the different projects competing for my money, here are five great reasons you should give to missions. Five Great Reasons You Should Give To Missions Expand the Kingdom This is probably the most important reason to give to missions. When you are a sender, you send people around the world whose sole purpose is to reach the lost. We live in a broken world, and only Christ can save it. The first complete Bible translation into the Inuktitut language was completed this spring for Inuit speaking aboriginal people's of Canada's arctic region numbering over 33,000. What is unique about this story I found in the Washington Post is that the native Inuit people translated this Bible themselves. It will be dedicated to the work of the Lord in an igloo shaped church in the town of Nunavut. This project started in 1978 and a New Testament translation was completed in 1991. Talk about a labor of love. Here are some excerpts from this inspirational story of the Inuit Bible translation at the Washington Post. As a society, we like getting the most bang for our buck whenever we spend or donate our money. This is often made evident in the way products are advertised or non-profits brag about their low administrative costs. When it comes to missions, people have the same attitude when deciding what missionary they should donate their money to. The value of short-term missions is fiercely debated, with many people reaching the conclusion that it is a poor financial investment to the Kingdom. The argument is simple: Why give money to a short-term missions team who will only be there for a week when that same money can most likely be used more efficiently when sent to a long-term missionary? Why pay thousands in airfare to send a team of amateurs when you could send money to missionary and have him/her hire a team of professionals? Even better, what about the option of helping a national missionary?     The Case For Short-Term Missions God's Economy Is Different Than Man's Economy S[more]
I ran across this story today that although is sad in once instance is also quite encouraging. It is written by Carl Moeller of Open Doors USA and can be found at Crosswalk.com. It is the story of how Jesus is using both Saudi nationals and people from other countries to spread the light of the gospel to the heart of Islam. Saudi Arabia is where Islam started. It is listed as one of the most oppressive governments concerning religious freedom. It is against the law to convert to Christianity in Saudi Arabia. The punishment for the crime is beheading. So when I read this story and what these brave Christians are doing in Saudi Arabia, I was both saddened and encouraged. Saddened because our brothers and sisters are in such grave danger but encouraged that there are people that are still willing to lay down their life for the sake of the gospel. How we Americans need to learn how to be so courageous in our faith. Here is some of the excerpts from the story. Saudi Arabian Christian layi[more]
I have always been a fan of Wycliffe Bible Translators. I knew some students who worked there when I was going to Bible College. They have always had a great reputation in the important work that they do. That is why I was quite surprised to read this news article from MercuryNews.com about a controversy that is brewing concerning how Wycliffe Bible translators are translating certain passages in the Bible that have to do with the trinity in their Bibles they are preparing for Muslim countries. This controversy has spread to the point that the Assemblies of God has decided to review it's relationship with Wycliffe. The World Evangelical Alliance is setting up an independent commission to look at the policies of Wycliffe and to decide if they are compromising the word of God to avoid offending Muslims. Here are some excerpts from the story. Wycliffe Bible Translators criticized over translation to Muslims. One of the largest Bible translators in the world is undergoing an indepen[more]
You know, I find it interesting at times where I find Christian news. This story comes from a Turkish Newspaper but it is about Christians in South Korea. It seems that one of our less than wholesome exports is coming to South Korea to give a concert and promote a lifestyle that clearly is not wanted in South Korea. Lady Gaga is kicking off her "Born This Way" tour. You know, I really have to roll my eyes at some of the things that pop stars do these days. Personally, I do not want to know what people do in their bedrooms and I am tired of people flaunting their sexual choices like a pair of dirty shorts. So I don't blame the South Korean Christians for praying against this type of thing being exported into their country. In fact I wish that the church in America was not so desensitized to all of this that they would once again rise up and pray against this type of thing here.  Here is part of the story from the Turkish Press.
