Top 10 Electric Scooters For Kids – Buyers Guide And Safety Tips

Remember the days when you would ride your skateboard or bicycle around the neighborhood with wind streaming in your hair as a kid? Those were the "good ole days." Well your child or grandchild can experience the same thrill as you had with an electric scooter.

Modern technology has made breakthroughs that we could not even imagine as kids. Electric scooters for kids are one of those things and in my opinion is a win win situation for the parent and kid alike. Not only do the kids get the joy of riding around with their friends, but the parent accomplishes the task of getting their child outside and in the fresh air playing with other children rather than sitting in front of the TV or video game console.

Here at Taber's Truths Top 10 Reviews I only recommend products that are rated 4 stars and above by real people who purchased real products. You can be confident that the electric scooters for kids that are listed are the best scooter that you can get for your child.

Not all scooters are created equal. Each has different age targets in mind. The cheapest scooter for young kids will not be the best scooter for a teenager and vice a versa. However if you pick the right scooter for the right age range then you can be rest assured you are getting a quality scooter for your child or grandchild.

Top 10 Picks For Electric Scooters For Kids

How I Picked These Electric Scooters For Kids

In making this list of electric scooters for your children I kept 3 things in mind: Safety, quality, and diversity.

Safety

As a grandparent myself, the last thing I want to see happen is that a kid would be seriously injured because of a review I gave. So when I decided to make this list of scooters for kids, safety was my number one priority.

That is why you do not see a scooter listed that travels over 15 mph. This is the same speed that the average bicycle will travel. Kids may get a few scrapes and bruises falling off a bicycle but normally they won't suffer serious injury, Especially if they are wearing a helmet and knee and elbow pads.

Quality

Each scooter is made by a reputable manufacturer. No matter where you look, the people who purchased these scooters were happy with what they received. There is no better test of product quality than happy customers.

Most of the scooters I have recommended are made by Razor. Razor has dominated the electric scooter market for kids because of their high quality. However I have also included a couple of other brands that are highly rated as well.

Diversity

I have included scooters that will thrill boys and girls. I have included plain electric scooters, scooters with seats, moped style scooters, tricycle scooters, and even a scooter for really young children. No matter your child, there is an electric scooter that they will love.

Features

The Razor E100 is a scaled down version of the E300 for children that want a great scooter but are not quite old enough for the speed of the E300.

Its top speed is 10 mph which will keep your new scooter star at speeds they can handle easily.

It has a cool LED lit deck that will be the envy of all the kids on the block.

It has a caliper break system on the front wheel similar to what you would find on a conventional bike.

My Review

The Razor E100 is a sturdy and well built scooter designed for the abuse that kids can dish out.

It comes in at a quite affordable price point making it a great gift for your child.

It offers a fun and stable riding experience.

The deck is not as wide as the E300 which will make it less enjoyable for older children which might help keep older brother or sister off of the younger siblings scooter.

Because of its solid tires, the ride is rougher, however I highly doubt that an 8 year old kid is going to care about how smooth it rides.

Overall this is a great scooter for the price.

Price

Pricing for an electric scooter for kids can vary from $60.00 for a small kids toy scooter all the way to almost $500.00 for a fully featured scooter for teenagers.

The price of the E100 is quite affordable for a quality kids electric scooter .

Its steel construction will make this a sturdy ride for years to come for your child.

My Review

One of the things you will love about the Razor Power Rider 360 Electric Tricycle is the durability of the wheels. Parents have commented how sturdy they are.

Much better than a Big Wheel which has plastic tires that wear down flat spots.

It also comes at a very affordable price point that will make it a great gift for your child,

The only drawbacks you should consider is that it takes 12 hours to recharge the batteries so you might want to consider purchasing a second battery so one can be charged while the other is being used.

It also cannot be run on rough terrain. Gravel and dirt roads do not work well with this tricycle.

Your mid-aged child will love the Maxtra Electric Scooter. With its aluminum construction and top speed of 12-14 mph they will think they are king of the road.

It has an adjustable handlebar and seat so that the scooter will still fit your child as he grows.

It has a kid sized deck and frame that is designed for kids ages 6-14 making it a perfect first scooter for kids that age.

With its 60 minutes battery life and its lower charge times, the Maxtra Electric Scooter makes a great gift for your boy or girl.

My Review

The Maxtra Electric Scooter is a great idea for your pre-teen kid. They will love how the handle bars and seat adjusts or if they don't want the seat it is easily removed.

It is almost as fast as a full speed scooter that work well for teenagers yet it is not quite as fast making it safer for younger less experienced scooter riders.

This scooter folds up and is easy to store weighing less than 30 lbs.

Although it says it is rated up to 177 lbs, I would not go that high. It is probably best for kids under 5 feet tall and no more than 120 lbs.

It comes mostly assembled but you will have to do a little bit yourself. Make sure you tighten everything very tightly. If you don't your handlebars and seat will slip.

Price

The price on electric scooters for kids can vary from $60.00 for a small kids toy scooter all the way to almost $500.00 for a fully featured scooter for kids 13-18.

The Maxtra Electric Scooter comes in at the bottom third of the price range making it an excellent deal for a child age 6-14. They will have years of riding ahead of them especially with its adjustable seat and handlebars.

The Maxtra Electric Scooter is perfect for your pre-teen child that wants to start scooting around the neighborhood. With it's slightly less speed capacity than scooters designed for teens and its lightweight design and aluminum construction, it is perfect for that young hero that wants to be like their older siblings.

Razor E300 Electric Motorized Scooter Review

Razor E300 Rechargeable Electric 24 Volt Motorized Ride On Kids Scooter, Red

Ages

Speed

Battery Life

Weight Limit

13 and up

15 mph

45 minutes

All sizes

Features

The Razor E300 has all the features you come to expect from the company that dominates the electric scooter market.

The twist-grip accelerator control on the right handlebar and the squeeze style caliper brake system on the left handlebar.

It has 10" pneumatic tires for a smooth ride and a wide deck with room for those growing feet of teenagers.

Even adults can ride the E300 as long as they are less than 220 lbs due to the steel frame.

Reviews

The Razor E300 is designed for a teenager. With its max speed at 15 mph it should be used by ages 13 and up.

Some kids even attach a basket to the front handlebars and ride their scooters to school.

It comes with a chain drive pulley system for longer lasting durability. When you couple that with its steel frame, this scooter will take a beating and still keep on running.

You will find that your teenager will complain, like with all scooters at this price range, that the battery life is not long enough at only 40 minutes. However this is solved by buying a second set of batteries so that they can charge while the others are in use.

The other drawback to this scooter is that it does not have a lock or a way to run a bike lock through the frame making a modification necessary in order for your teen to take their scooter to school.

Price

The price on children's scooters can vary from $60.00 for a small kids toy scooter all the way to almost $500.00 for a fully featured scooter for kids 13-18.

The Razor E300 comes in right around the mid price point making it a great deal for your teenage son or daughter. They will get years of enjoyment out of it and it is built tough enough to take it.

Amazon's Current Price

$249.00

I give this scooter an

A

for children 13 and up

The bottom line is that the Razor E300 is a top notch scooter for what it is designed to do. Using it as a mode of transportation was not the intent of the manufacturer. Being a fun and exciting way to scoot around the neighborhood and have fun with your friends was their primary objective and they have accomplished that with flying colors.

If you want to spend the time putting a clamp on the handlebar so a bike lock can be used, makes it able to be modified for your teen to take it to school.

Pros

  • Steel Frame
  • Wide Foot Deck

Cons

  • Battery Life
  • No Lock

It maxes out at 10 mph making it the perfect scooter for pre-teen children 8 and up.

It has a push button accelerator control and hand caliper braking making it easy for the kids to operate.

But the best part of all is that it has 1 hour and 20 minutes of battery life!

Reviews

Your child will still be out zipping around the neighborhood on this scooter while all of his friends are back home charging theirs because of the upgraded battery and charging system of the Razor Power Core E90.

And you will love it too because of the hub motor which eliminates the chain drive system so you do not have to continually adjust the tension of the chain to keep it on the sprockets.

Your child will get double the fun out of the Razor Power Core E90 with 80 minutes of continual use battery life and only 6-8 hours of charge time compared to 12 hours on other models.

They will love the Urethane wheels that grip the road making them able to do tight maneuvers and great tricks with their scooter.

The only drawback to this model is that it is rated for only 120 lbs. Your teenagers might want to hop on this scooter because it lasts so long but that is not advisable because of this weight restriction.

Price

The price for scooters can vary from $60.00 for a small kids toy scooter all the way to almost $500.00 for a fully featured scooter for kids 13-18.

The Razor Power Core E90 is a great deal coming in at the lower 20% of that price range. Your child will receive years of enjoyment out of it with double the amount of fun compared to other scooters in this class.

Razor E200S Seated Electric Scooter -Teal

Ages

Speed

Weight Limit

13 and up

12 mph

40 minutes

154 lbs.

Features

The Razor E200s is the second electric scooter I have reviewed that comes with an detachable seat.

Its 12 mph speed is not quite as fast as the E300 but is still fast enough for most teenagers.

The 8" pneumatic tires and the caliper style braking system makes it a safe ride for your child.

It has convenient squeeze style braking control and hand-twist acceleration control.

The seat is comfortable but if they want to remove it for stand up style scooter operation, it is easily detachable.

Reviews

Your child will love the versatility of the Razor E200 Electric Scooter. When they want to use it for transportation, they can use the seat. When they want to use it for just zipping around the neighborhood, then they can detach the seat and ride it in stand up fashion,

With its top speed at 12 mph it is still relatively fast for scooters of this price range.

Its frame is still the steel frame that Razor is famous for making it durable no matter what the treatment.

At 46 lbs. it is still light enough to maneuver and to pack up and carry around.

The 8: tires will give your child a safe and smooth ride for years to come.

The only drawback, which I have mentioned on numerous models is the battery life and charging time. It only has a 40 minute battery life and takes 12 hours to charge. However you can get around this by purchasing extra batteries.

Price

As I have said more than once, the prices for electric scooters range from a low of $60.00 for a kids toy scooter, to almost $500.00 for a top of the line scooter.

The Razor E200s is priced at the lower half of that range which makes it an excellent scooter that will provide hours and years of fun for your child. Couple that with its seating option and you also provide a practical form of short range transportation as well

The Razor E200s is a great scooter that gives you a lot of options. Its speed is good enough for any rider and the detachable seat makes it versatile in its use. Because of its durable steel frame your child will love this scooter for years to come.

It is easy to use with the accelerator on the right handlebar and the brake on the left.

The Pulse Performance Products Spider-Man Safe Start 3-Wheel Electric Scooter is a toy scooter for small kids and should be viewed from that perspective.

It is not really comparable to the other electric scooters on this list because it is designed for your smaller children who may want to think they can do what their older siblings do or you just want to give them a taste of the scooting world.

The steering limiter and the safe start gradual acceleration will keep your little one safe as they use the scooter.

With a max speed of only 1.75 mph, they won't break any speed records but neither will they have any hard bumps or bruises.

Reviews

I hesitated including this scooter in this list of scooters for kids, but small kids deserve the chance to have fun on a scooter too.

This is a toy scooter but it will give them a taste of what fun having a scooter will be.

I am not sure I would recommend it for a kid who has already turned 6. You may want to get them a little more advanced scooter, but for those 3 and 4 year olds this will be fun for them for a while.

They will love the Spider Man design which is a favorite of all kids.

So if you have a young child or grandchild, then the Pulse Performance Products Safe Start Electric Scooter may be the ticket for a fun and enjoyable gift.

Price

Scooter prices range from $60.00 all the way up to $500.00 depending on the model and age of the kid you are buying for.

KIds Electric Scooter Buyers Guide

An electric scooter will be a great gift for a kid but you want to make sure you get the right scooter. An electric scooter is more than just a motor and some wheels. You probably won't want to get the same type of scooter for your 6 year old daughter than you would for your 13 year old son.

These tips will help you decide what is the best scooter for your child.

Speed

If your child is the type that feels the need for speed then you will want to get them a scooter that moves. Most of the electric scooters for older kids max out at 15 mph. This is more than enough to satisfy their need for excitement.

However if your child is younger, say maybe under age 11 then you might want to tone down the speed factor. A scooter that runs at 10-12 mph is plenty fast for them. And if they are really young, then keep it under 10 mph.

Look And Design

Nobody knows what your child or grandchild likes better than you. However when picking out a scooter that they think will be "cool", make sure that you take into consideration things like the size and weight of the scooter. Are they able to pick it up for themselves?

You also need to think about the size of your kid. Will the scooter handle their weight? Will it be too small or too large for them? Do they want a seat or do they want to stand while riding? These things are important in getting the best electric scooter that they will love for years to come.

Durability

Shoddy craftsmanship makes for a disappointing gift. This is why, as I mentioned earlier, I only chose electric scooters that have great craftsmanship and are loved by real people who own them.

The Razor scooters for instance, are known for being constructed with steel-made frames; high-torque, chain driven motors and built-to-last batteries —as long as they’re properly charged.

Battery Life

There is no getting around it. The more time your child can ride their new scooter, the more fun they are going to have. A scooter with a poor battery life is going to be a disappointment.

That is why I have chosen scooters that have long battery life. I also would suggest that you purchase a second battery so that while one is being used the other one can be charged so they can have double the fun.

Safety Tips For Kids Riding Electric Scooters

As with all outdoor riding equipment, safety is always a concern. Whether you are riding a bicycle, skateboard, hoverboard, or electric scooter, a parent's primary concern is that they do it in a safe manner.

Here are a few tips that will help your kids have a safe ride with their new electric scooter.

Always Wear A Helmet

It may be considered a no-brainer, but it is better to remind everyone to wear a helmet than to see someone with a serious brain injury from an accident. Make sure you wear protective headgear when you are riding your electric scooter.

Wear Knee and Elbow Pads

When I was growing up I suffered my fair share of scrapes and bruises and always it was on my knees or elbows. Today there is a wide variety of protective gear available for kids. If you don't like to get scrapes and bruises when you accidentally fall of your scooter, then you may want to consider wearing elbow and knee pads while riding.

Wear Appropriate Shoes

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to wear the proper shoes. Open toed shoes or sandals are not a good idea. Or going barefoot for that matter. Your feet can slip, and get jammed in the wheels or scrap on the ground. Your little toe will go crying all the way home if you do not keep it covered and it gets a big asphalt scrape or worse.

Ride Scooters The Right Size For Your Age

Riding the right size scooter is important. If you are too small for the scooter you will have a hard time controlling it. If you are too big for the scooter, then you run the risk of breaking it or burning out the motor. Ride the right size scooter for your height and weight.

Learn To Brake And Manuever

Before you go out and become the next NASCAR champion of the scooter world, make sure you have had sufficient practice braking and maneuvering.  You never know when you will need to stop suddenly to avoid hitting someone or avoid having someone hit you. Running into people, cars, or stray animals can really spoil a great day of fun.

Stay With Other Kids

There is safety in numbers. Motorists and pedestrians are more likely to see a group of kids riding scooters than one single scooter rider. It is also safer to stay with people you know or your friends while riding. Make sure that you avoid strangers.

Watch The Road Or Sidewalk

Sometimes when we are having fun we get distracted and are not looking where we are going. Make sure to keep your eyes ahead of you and know what is coming up. Look 50' or more in front of you every 4 seconds or so to make sure you avoid obstacles or people that may be in your way. This is especially true if you are riding your scooter on the sidewalk or on the road.

Basic Scooter Maintenance

Garmin Striker 5cv Review

Display Size:

5"

Ideal For:

Entry Level Fish Finder Buyers

Price:

$261.03

Not to be outdone by Hummingbird, Garmin has put out a great entry level fish finder to compete. The Striker 5cv (clear view) is a strong competitor. With 800 pixels in a 5" screen, you will be able to distinguish where the fish are.

Features

  • 3 Frequency Sonar
  • ClearVu And SideVu Technology
  • GPS
  • 5" Screen
  • Mid And High Range Chirp
  • Trolling Motor Mount

I cannot go into it enough how the 800 pixel 5" screen helps you define what is fish and what is structure. Combine that with the 3 frequency (260kHz, 455kHz, and 800kHz) sonar and you have a powerful little fish finder in a small package. It is almost picture like quality of images.

The G20-TM transducer gives you great depth range and the trolling motor mount makes it a complete package for the entry level fish finder buyer. If you are on a tight budget then this fish finder is for you.

Conclusion

The only drawback to the Striker 5cv is the lack of mapping. It has GPS but no way to record where you have been or what you saw previously. However if you are just looking for an entry level fish finder, the image quality of what you see below and to the side of you can't be beat.

It does use Chirp technology giving you greater ability to discern fish from structures and foliage on the bottom of the lake or river.

It also has a quick disconnect system so you can consider this unit a portable fish finder as well.

  • Waterproof

It's dual band sonar shows fish under and directly around the boat. Its LED backlit screen helps you differentiate between fish and other structures below the water. Its fish ID system and water temperature guage helps you find the fish you have been missing without a fish finder.

It's quick disconnect plug and size makes this a perfect portable fish finder. You can easily remove it and transfer it between your small boat and kayak.

Fish Finder Buyers Guide

Quick Tips On Selecting The Best Fish Finder

  • Don't out cheap yourself. Make sure you buy the type of fish finder that will work for you in the long run. Many anglers regret getting too small of a display or one that is not very powerful. They limited themselves in their fishing experience to save a few bucks.
  • Consider units that can be upgraded. If money is an issue, then pay attention whether or not the unit you are considering can be upgraded. If so, then maybe you can buy an upgradeable unit now and upgrade it next year.
  • Buy what you need. As we all know, money doesn't grow on trees. As much as the top notch features are tempting, if you are not going to use them, then you have spent more than you need. Ask yourself what type of fishing will you do? If you are sticking to shallow lakes or streams, then maybe you don't need the most powerful fish finder out there.

Understanding The Functions Of A Fish Finder

There are two main components of a fish finder. They are the display unit and the transducer. The transducer is the component that produces the sonar that is read by the display unit. Here are some important aspects of both of these units.

The Display Unit

Display units come in all types of sizes and shapes. Some are small enough to mount on your rod while others really need to be mounted on the dash of your fishing boat.

The display unit is the part of the system that controls all the aspects of the fish finder system. You set the sensitivity and type of signal produced from the transponder. You don't want to skimp on the display unit. You can have the most sensitive sonar in the world but if it is displayed on a lousy display it won't help you find fish.

graphic showing how pixels are used horizontally and vertically

Resolution

Resolution is the amount of pixels that are used in displaying the image. A pixel is a dot of image information. If you have 800 pixels of resolution then it takes 800 dots to go from the top to the bottom of the image in a straigh line. So 800x800 resolution is 800 dots across by 800 dots down. The larger the display resolution the more defined the screen image is going to be. Do not go below 240 pixels top to bottom. The image will be too fuzzy to be of any use to you and even then it is pretty fuzzy.

Screen Size

Bigger does not always make better. Smaller screen sizes are better for small boats, kayaks, and rubber flotation devices and larger ones are better for boats with cockpits. However smaller size fish finders do have their drawbacks especially with multi-screen mode or when being viewed from a distance.

Multi-Screen Functionality

Some fish finders come with the option to view multiple screens at the same time. Some units will show you different views of the bottom and others will show you a map and your sonar at the same time. This functionality works best on units with larger screens.

Colors

Modern fish finders have moved away from black and white screens. Color allows you to be able to define the image better. In this case, the more bits of color, the more your image will be defined. They can range from 16 bit color up to millions of shades of color and beyond.

Additional Features

The best fish finders will not just show you the depth of the bottom and what is below. They will show you water temperature, speed you are traveling, GPS position and more. Some even come with alarms to notify you when it finds fish!

The Transducer

The transducer is the unit that produces the sonar signal. It sends a ping into the water and then receives the echo back and translates that into data that the display unit can understand. Most transducers are mounted on the outside of the boat although there are a few that will operate through the boat's hull.

Here are some key features of transducers.

Frequencies

The frequency is the number of times the transducer emits a sound wave per second. These are measured in Khz. KiloHertz. Most transducers will come with either 50, 83, 192 or 200 kHz frequencies. Higher frequencies, like 192 and 200 kHz work best in shallower water, while the low 50 kHz transducers work best for use in deep water. High frequency sonar however, uses more battery power.

Many fish finders have the ability to use more than one frequency at a time making the sonar results better. There are 4 major types of frequency types used in fish finders.

  1. Single Frequency. This is in all basic fish finders. It is best used in portable and shallow water situations.
  2. Dual Frequency. The transducer uses 2 set frequencies to gather it's sonar data. This gives you better clarity.
  3. Multiple Frequency. This is where you have more control over what frequencies are used with variable settings.
  4. Chirp Technology. (Compressed High Intensity Radar Pulse) This technology emits a variety of frequencies simultaneously giving you the most complete sonar image available today.

Power

The transducer's power has a direct impact on your fish finder's clarity and depth. The power of the transducer is measured in watts. The higher the watts, the more powerful it is.

As a practical matter, the deeper you fish, the more power you want but if you are mainly a shallow water angler, then you can get away with a lower wattage transducer. As a rule of thumb, at 50 kHz, for every 100 watts of power, your finder/transducer can show readings up to 400 feet.

At 200 kHz, for every 100 watts of power, your finder/transducer can show readings up to 100 feet. Most mid-range finders available are dual-frequency, so you can see readings from both frequencies(usually 50/200 or 85/200) in a split screen fashion.

Cone Angle

The cone angle is the dimensions of the beam as it is sent from your boat into the water. It looks like an upside down ice cream cone. The wider the degree of the cone angle, the larger of an area is scanned below you. A 50 degree cone angle will theoretically cover more area than a 15 degree cone angle. However you need to remember that the larger the cone angle the less sensitive your fish finder become at deeper depths.

Most units start at 15 - 20 degree cone angles. This is usually a good starting point for your fish finder. Higher quality units come with more than one cone so you can use one for down sonar and one for side sonar.

graphic of a sonar cone used in typical fish finders

How To Use A Fish Finder

When you purchase your fish finder you will be learning how to read sonar based data. This is different than what you would see if you panned an underwater camera down under your boat. The data is time based, not distance based.

So when you use your new fish finder you will need to remember that what you are seeing is not spacial movement but time scans.

You also will find that you get better images and data if you keep moving rather than stay stationary. The reason for this is that with movement you give your fish finder the ability to get different angles on any fish or object below you.

Tips For Reading The View Screen

Not all fish finders have icons that tell you what is a fish and what is a tree stump. Not always is it easy to tell right off the bat. Here are a few tips to help you read your view screen.

  • A thick line at the bottom shows a soft bottom where a thin line shows a hard or rocky bottom.
  • The right to left movement of your screen is not panning right to left. It is the image based on time.
  • Adjust your sensitivity controls so that objects are clear and distinct from the background.
  • Mount your transducer where it gets a steady flow of water across it rather than near turbulence. This will greatly improve the image you see on your view screen.

Here is a helpful video on how to read your new fish finder.

Final Thoughts on Fish Finder Technology

I still remember the days when I had to know how to read the water in order to find fish. However I also love the new technology that makes it so much easier to find the fish and where the fish are biting.

Let me know if you found this fish finder list helpful. Let me know if there is anything I can add that will help you make your decision on what is the best fish finder for you. I will try to update the content as time and technology changes.

Top 10 acoustic electric guitars

Top 10 Acoustic Electric Guitars For 2017 – Buyers Guide

In the good ole days before the invention of the piezo electric guitar pickup and acoustic electric guitars, the way you used an acoustic guitar in a live performance was to try to mic it. Soundmen across the planet hated this because the method was prone to feedback and the guitarist had to remain motionless otherwise the sound levels would fluctuate.

It was in the 1950's that Gibson first attempted to produce an acoustic electric guitar. However it did not produce a very good acoustic sound. It wasn't until Country Music legend Glenn Campbell asked Ovation Guitars to make him an acoustic electric guitar that the modern version of the acoustic electric guitar was born.

If you plan to do live performances then you will do well with any of these top 10 acoustic electric guitars.

Yamaha A-Series AC3R

Yamaha is one of my favorite affordable brands of acoustic electric guitars.

I love their natural, dynamic plugged-in tone and stage-ready simplicity from the SRT2 pickups;

Plus they are easy to play out of the box thanks to hand-rolled fingerboard edges.

And of course, Yamaha's legendary road-ready construction, the A-Series is the guitar to take your playing to the next level.

Pro Guitarist Dave Goodman demonstrates the A Series electro-acoustic guitar models from Yamaha. You will find this video very interesting and understand why Yamaha is one of the most popular acoustic electric guitars on the market.

Martin Road Series DRS1

You can never question the quality of a Martin electric acoustic guitar with the top, back and sides crafted of solid sapele and braced for resonance and projection.

The DRS1 neck is constructed with multilaminate Stratabond for extra rigidity and ruggedness, and the bridge and fingerboard are made of Richlite that achieves a similar look to ebony.

This DRS1 comes equipped with the Fishman Sonitone sound reinforcement system giving it the classic Martin sound that we have all come to love and expect.

Once again the guys at Guitar Center have produced a great video about the Martin Road Series DRS1. Eventually we hope to add them to our list of vendors for all our musical instrument reviews. Take a look at the video and check out all that the Martin Road series acoustic electric guitar has to offer.

Taylor GS Mini-E

Between the compact size and full-voiced tone and projection, acoustic electric players at every level love having a Taylor GS Mini-E within arm’s reach.

Wherever you may be — whether on the go or on the couch you will love this guitar.

The hardwood mahogany top yields a meaty, punchy response that lively pickers and strummers will enjoy.

And Taylor's ES-T electronics produces a rich sound few will equal.

Check out this video of the Taylor GS Mini-E. After watching this video you will totally understand why Taylor is one of the most popular acoustic electric guitars and desired by musicians all over the world. The sound produced by a Taylor guitar is like no other.

Martin X Series 2015 DX1RAE

With the bold sound of an Indian rosewood laminate body, the crystal-clarity of a Sitka spruce top, paired with cutting-edge Fishman electronics, the Martin DX1RAE is a steal.

This is one of Martin's best deals ever. The X Series shows Martin's commitment to providing an inexpensive and competitive option to players dedicated to live performance.

Dressed in a satin finish and featuring chrome tuners, chrome hardware, this guitar has the look and sound of a highly collectible Martin guitar.

As the guys at Musician's Friend say, everyone who is a guitarist wants a Martin Guitar. But until recently they have been priced out of the average player's budget. Not anymore. This sweet guitar is priced in any player's budget. Check out this video on the Martin X Series DX1RAE

Best Acoustic Electric Guitars Under $500.00

Martin X Series 2015 DX1AE

Once again we have a Martin X Series DX1 at a little less expensive price point but still a great guitar for the money.

The difference between the DX1RAE and the DX1AE is that the R stands for Rosewood. The AE in Martin speak means Acoustic Electric.

Whatever the price point you are comfortable with, I do not believe it is possible to go wrong buying a Martin guitar.

Epiphone EJ-200SCE

The EJ-200 style is simply the world's most famous acoustic guitar, known equally for its majestic look and focused, complex sound.

When the EJ-200 was first introduced, it immediately filled a need for a deeper, more balanced and powerful acoustic instrument that could project over stage and radio.

The J-200 was a radical new design, bigger and bolder than any previous guitar, capable of projecting well beyond that of any other acoustic on the market--a fact that still holds true today with the EJ-200SCE.

Once you watch this video on the Epiphone EJ-200SCE you will be highly impressed by how much guitar you can get for the price. It has such flexibility it makes a great choice for a your first live performance guitar. You can't go wrong with this Epiphone guitar.

Tonewoods - Different Woods For Different Sounds

Guitar makers and craftsmen, called luthiers, have found that the single most important piece of wood in making a guitar is the top wood. Different woods resonate differently with the sounds. Finger players will want a different type of wood than strummers, and strummers will want a different type of wood than pickers.

After the top wood, the wood used in the back, sides, and neck are the next important wood types used in an acoustic electric guitar.

It is important to remember that the types of wood used in a guitars construction can only do so much. It is just as important to take into consideration the quality of the craftsmanship in constructing the guitar as well as the individual quality of each piece of wood used. You can have a good piece of spruce or a bad piece of spruce. The same goes for the other types of wood used as well.

Here some of the more common types of wood used in crafting an acoustic electric guitar and their own particular qualities.

Spruce

Spruce is one of the more common woods used in crafting guitars. The most common type of spruce is the Sitka Spruce. It is a very rigid wood for being considered a softwood. It is very lightweight which is why guitar makers and players like it. Spruce gives a very direct sound and keeps its clarity when being played forcefully.

Cedar

Cedar is a popular top wood because of its warm rich sound. Most guitar craftsmen try to use Western Red Cedar when building a guitar designed for finger players. It is a very responsive wood for those with a light touch.

Mahogany

Mahogany topped guitars have a great punchy sound that works well if you are going to play country music or the blues. When acoustic guitar craftsmen use mahogany in the sides or back of the guitar then it gives the guitar a great range of overtones coming out of it.

Maple

When acoustic guitars are made with Sugar,  Big Leaf, or Bearclaw Maple, they have a more "true" or "transparent" sound. This means that what is being produced by the guitar is not colored or shaded by many overtones.

Rosewood

Rosewood is known for its high acoustic response rate. This is why it is used so often in bridges. It gives you a complex sound filled with lots of dark and warm overtones. It provides a rich sound both in the low ends and in the mid and high ranges.

Guitar Body Styles

There are 3 basic acoustic guitar body styles. They are the dreadnought, the classic, and the jumbo.

The dreadnought is by far the most popular and versitile of the 3 shapes. It was launched by CF Martin years ago and was named after an old English warship. Its distinctives is its rounded shoulders and the fact that most dreadnoughts join with the neck at the 14th fret.

The dreadnought has by far the most even balance between size, volume, and ease of play.

Next comes the classic guitar body style. I would wager that if you were given a guitar as a child, you played one with the classic guitar body style. These are more commonly called classical guitars. They have the nylon strings and are the easiest to on your fingers to play. They are not as large as the dreadnoughts

Classical guitars have a Spanish origin and accounts for the flamenco style of guitar playing associated with them. They are normally smaller in size than their steel stringed cousins.

Finally we have the jumbo guitar body style. The jumbo guitar lives up to its name. It has a jumbo size and jumbo volume. It was first released in 1937 by Gibson and was used as a rhythm guitar to complement the more precise lead guitars. Jumbo guitars are meant to be used in concert with other guitars. It is not well suited for standing on its own.

7 Things To Look For In Your Next Guitar

There are 7 things you should consider when purchasing your new acoustic electric guitar. The level of importance of each of these things will depend on what you are going to use your new guitar for.

Tonewood

As I mentioned earlier, the tonewood will change the way your guitar sounds. Pay attention to what the top is made of. This is the most important piece on the guitar. Understand that the rarer the wood, the more expensive the guitar will be and hardwoods are becoming scarcer over time.

Body Style

I just covered the different types of body styles. However remember that the body style will effect both the ease of play and the sound that is projected. Some acoustic electric guitars come with a cutaway body style that gives you easier access to the fret board. You might want to take this into consideration as well.

Also the size of the guitar might matter. If you are just going to use it for home use or maybe take it with you on trips, you might want a smaller size.

The Neck

The neck can be a very important consideration. If you are like me, I was gifted with short, fat, stubby fingers. A wide neck makes a guitar much harder to play for me. The thickness and width of the neck is generally based on the size of the guitar. Many guitars necks are listed as 12 or 14 fret necks but this is not the size of the neck. This is referring to the amount of frets are clear of the guitar body.

I am one of those people that are in-between sizes. I can play a full sized guitar but a 3/4 size guitar is much easier to play for me.

Tuning Machines Or Pegs

The type of tuning machines, or sometimes called pegs is important. If they are not very good quality then your guitar will need to be constantly tuned. It will lose its tune as you play. Enclosed tuning machines are the best. They resist corrosion and do not get dust in them. They will last much longer.

The Bridge And Fingerboard

The materials of the bridge and fingerboard or fret board do not have a lot of effect on the sound quality. However they do have an effect on ease of play. Some guitar players like to lower the height of the bridge to lower the strings so they do not have to press so hard in order to lay the strings across the frets. The downside to this is that if you lower the strings too far, they can buzz on other frets or will buzz if you press too hard.

The Finish

The type of finish may have a slight effect on the tone of your guitar. However it is really beyond your control the type of finish that is on your guitar unless you have a guitar custom built for you. Most quality guitar manufacturers are aware of this and choose appropriately.

The finish is put on the guitar to protect it. It is usually one layer of stain or paint followed by several layers of clear coat finish.

The Electronics

Acoustic electric guitars come with pickups and pre-amplifiers already installed in them. These are either placed in a hole in the side of the guitar or mounted inside the guitar body. Some acoustic electric guitars come with not only a pickup and pre-amp but comes with an EQ and a tuner as well. I have even seen some with special effects electronics as well.

You will want to make sure that you have volume and tone controls. The rest is just bells and whistles.

Why Are Some Guitars More Expensive Than Others?

There is a long list of reasons why some acoustic electric guitars are more expensive than others. One of the primary factors is how and where it is built.

If your guitar is hand crafted in the USA then it will be more expensive than if it was pre-fabricated in a factory in China.

Wood also plays a big part in the cost of a guitar. Premium guitars are made with premium wood where the lower cost guitars are made of laminate woods, also known as plywood. 🙂 Laminate woods do not resonate as well as solid wood pieces. However they are more predictable in different weather types and temperatures. Many players find laminates work great for live stage performances.

Choosing Your Next Guitar

Choosing an acoustic electric guitar is as personal as choosing a spouse. There is no such thing as "this one will do." It all depends on what type of musician you are, your experience level, and what you want to accomplish. However with this list of the top 10 acoustic electric guitars, there is a guitar that will fit your needs and desires.

Personally if you want anything more than just something to pluck at home, there is no reason not to get an acoustic electric guitar. You never know when you might need to plug into a sound system, do a little home recording, or maybe play for a wedding or church service. Better to be prepared than have to come up with a less than optimal microphone situation.
